Is it Christian music if it doesn’t even say “Jesus?”

This opens up a long and tedious discussion of “what is Christian music?” and I don’t have the time to go into right here- but I want to touch on this specific topic.

In the CCM industry you’ll hear people joke (or sometimes not joke) about increasing the “JPMs” (Jesus’s per minute) of a song. And I kinda get it- this genre isn’t bound by instrumentation, vocal style, region of the world, or any other descriptor of typical genres. The “genre” of Christian music is held together by a mission and an audience. The only common denominator between Forrest Frank, Skillet, Brandon Lake, and myself is that we’re trying to make music that connects with Christian audiences and glorifies God. So a lot of times that involves saying “Jesus.”

But- my conscious is also bound by scripture, and in the 10 commandments we’re given a command “don’t take the Lord’s name in vain.”

Now that sentence means a LOT. But, I’ve taken it to mean “don’t use the Lords name for your own vanity.” And that is so easy to do, especially in Christian music.

SO, I have a rule for myself- I don’t just throw in the name “Jesus” to check a box and make my song qualified for the Christian genre.

I believe that if I’m writing about my life, and being as honest as possible, my relationship with God will come through and point to Jesus, whether or not I specifically say His name.

In fact- in our Bibles there are whole books that don’t DIRECTLY reference God, (Esther, Song of Solomon) but His hand and character is shown throughout regardless.

So, I think it’s okay. It can still be “Christian music” even if a song doesn’t directly say “Jesus.”

To God be the glory.
