Just in— BARRICADE: DOCUMENTATION OF THE STUDENT OCCUPATIONS OF 2024, IN SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE by Comrades Fighting to Stop Cop Cities Everywhere. Link in bio!

BARRICADE documents the student occupations in the Spring of 2024 through the lens of the barricades constructed at the encampments. 54 photographs of barricades from 10 different campuses are culled from social media, the press, and the occupiers themselves, and these images run alongside a running collection of texts about barricades and occupation pulled from text threads, interviews with occupiers, and historical texts about barricades. Together they narrate the struggle via the space between affect and effect. Beautiful 2 color riso!

Also, we are officially out of the limited edition @chadjfelix BOOKS totes. Thanks to everyone who picked up a tote, we were able to donate $500 to @pal_legal.

Love and solidarity for everyone engaging in direct action in the struggle against the U.S. funded and Israeli perpetrated genocide of the Palestinian people. We will not stop until Palestine is free.

Amidst the collective horror at Israel’s unfolding genocide against Palestinians, the eruption of student encampments across college campuses in solidarity with Gaza emerged like a collective embodiment of what millions across the world felt finally taking physical form. Finally, we saw a movement pushing back, even in a small way, against genocide, apartheid, and forced famine.

Yet no sooner had tents been pitched on Columbia’s lawn (including by Jewish students and Jewish student organizations) than the media panic began and the conversation became dominated by dire warnings about the supposed anti-Semitism of the students. In the US, UK, Germany, and elsewhere we’ve heard students and other Palestine solidarity activists be compared to Nazis. New draconian laws have been introduced to suppress speech and visual expressions of solidarity with Palestinans.

With the backdrop of a real genocide unfolding, those of us in the West find ourselves in a fight not only to stop these horrors but to define what fascism means and indeed what it has always meant. Is fascism best understood as an aberration embodied in Hitler, Mussolini, and the MAGA movement? Or is fascism, as many voices in these subscription books argue, something deeply rooted in our societies, something that never left us?

As Aimé Cesaire wrote in Discourse on Colonialism, Western society’s revulsion to Hitler was rooted not in “the crime against man” but rather “the fact that he applied to Europe colonialist procedures which until then had been reserved exclusively for the Arabs of Algeria, the coolies of India, and the blacks of Africa.” Or, as Langston Hughes put it, “fascism is a new name for that kind of terror the Negro has always faced in America.”

We present this month’s subscription picks in the hope that they will better enable us to fight fascism in all its manifestations so that we may build a radically different world for all of us.

More about this month’s subscription picks and the subscription program generally at the link in our bio!
