Join me on the set of the Sleep Smoking music video for the official single release show this Saturday 3/21!

I’ll be playing an intimate show in an old Canton train station where we filmed the music video that recently dropped. Honored to be accompanied by the talented @jacobtrombetta on pedal steel (who also filmed the video) and my friends @fredthomas and @shamechambermusic who will be sharing their own set of songs with us.🚬👼🚬👼 (<—Fred and John)

Bring your friends and your moms and dads and don’t forget to bring your own beverage:

846 Market Ave S
Canton OH 44702

Doors at 6:00 /Music at 7:00

Suggested $12 donation at the door. Your donation propels these kinds of creative endeavors. 💛 Cash/Venmo/Card accepted. See you soon!

A battery stores energy through a chemical reaction that releases electrons as the chemicals internally convert from one state to another. This process limits how fast a battery can safely deliver current and why it provides steady power over a long period. A capacitor stores energy in an electric field created by separating charges on two plates, with no chemical reaction involved. Because the plates are separated by an insulator and the energy is held purely in that electric field, a capacitor can charge and discharge far faster than any battery, but it holds much less total energy. Batteries excel at long duration power, while capacitors excel at rapid bursts of current.

In this video I test the LD1020, a low-cost 10 GHz Doppler radar motion sensor that can detect movement through wood, plastic, and even glass. Unlike traditional PIR infrared sensors, this radar module works by sending out a microwave signal and detecting the Doppler shift when something moves. I’ll show you how it works, explain the pinout and timing behavior, and demonstrate its real-world range and sensitivity. For less than two dollars, it’s an impressive sensor for DIY electronics, alarms, and smart projects.

This project turns a simple Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) into a surprisingly accurate color checker. By pulsing an addressable LED through red, green, and blue, the sensor measures how much light is reflected from a surface. Each color creates a unique reflection pattern that the code matches to the closest color name… all in less than a quarter of a second!
With just a 10k LDR, a microcontroller, a button, and a small display, the setup delivers results that feel way beyond the simplicity of the parts. A custom shroud ensures the LDR only sees reflected light, making the readings reliable. Orange, for example, reflects strong red but weaker green and blue, which makes it easy for the code to recognize.
It’s proof that even basic sensors can be pushed to do much more than you might expect.
