📝: What drew you to this light, and why did it feel worth remembering?
💭: “I was drawn to the way light brought each scene to life in its own way. It made me slow down, look a little longer, and capture moments I knew I’d want to remember.”

Chaila’s photography journey began in 2022 when two friends introduced her to the world of film. That same year, she picked up her first disposable camera just to try it out and instantly fell in love with the process. The excitement of waiting for the photos to be developed and the soft, nostalgic tones of film made the experience feel special. Before film, she mostly used her phone and a Canon EOS 1500D, but shooting film changed the way she watch everyday moments.

Later in 2022, those same friends @str.ctlyfilm & @mikasalandanan gifted her a Canon Sure Shot 115u, which quickly became her everyday camera. Living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney has strongly influenced her photography, with many of her photos centred around the ocean, beaches, surfers, and the warm late afternoon coastal light. Film has taught her to slow down, be present, and appreciate the beauty in simple scenes.

This photo captures a surfer riding through rolling waves with the coastline in the background. She was drawn to the layers of the ocean, the soft blues and greens of the water, and how small the surfer appears against the movement and power of the sea.
