At the heart of the story told by our Champs Camp Archive Project is its founder, Phil Martin. Phil established the gym in Moss Side in the 1980s, transforming a derelict building with the help of the young boxers and community around him. Champs Camp went on to produce multiple British boxing champions, at one point training four current champions at the same time. But its story is about much more than success in the ring. Phil Martin made Champs Camp a space for community, belonging, discipline and ambition. This Black History Month, we’re celebrating Phil Martin’s contribution to Manchester and his legacy that continues at Champs Camp today. The Champs Camp Archive is a Manchester Histories project, made possible thanks to generous funding and support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the University of Manchester. #ChampsCamp #ManchesterHistories #BHM #BHMUK #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackBritishHistory #Boxing #MossSide #Manchester A yellow archival poster titled “The Champs Camp Archive Project / 02,” featuring the Manchester Histories logo and a large colour photograph of boxer Frank Grant raising his gloved hands while sitting on the shoulders of a smiling Phil Martin. The caption reads, “Frank Grant on the shoulders of Phil Martin, c. 1992.” A smaller line below credits The Champs Camp Archive.
