I had to sit with it.
At the very least for a day.
To let it settle into my heart like the jewel of exquisite memory it is now. It wasn’t just that the benefit dinner was a success in the everyday terms a mortal would use. The food was great. We raised beyond our goal. No. That doesn’t cut it at all. This dinner was pure, beautiful, exquisite flow state triumph. Each player in the game, from the magical chefs, those weavers of marvelous taste and texture, to the phenomenally present, appreciative light-heart guests, to the silver white Kulua moon hanging in her nest of stars, to the soft breath of the orchard, holding us all, each tree embracing the torch light with their foliage the way a beautiful woman wears a dress, to the sound of wine pouring alongside mirthful laughter.
It wasn’t a success.
It was a gorgeous triumph in the art of living. I cannot be grateful enough. I cannot be more astounded and ebullient by the beauty of my community.
I am full.
I am grateful.
I am completely, overwhelmingly whole to the brim with love.
What a night.

While most of you won’t watch this whole vid or read this, it’s important to me and I’ve got something to say about it.

Hard to put this into words but, ima give it a shot…

First of all, thank you so much @chanelvis @littletsunamitattoo

You are an exceptional human, artist, and all around boss babe that I’m lucky to call a friend. Thank you for your time, heart, and our D&Ms. I am so grateful for this experience and lifetime memento that commentates not only my life but our shared time/conversations.

I could give an in depth explanation about the meaning behind this work, but it’s for me to understand and for you to stay curious. Honestly, I don’t really care what you think, which is a big deal for me.

I spent a lot of my life caring how people saw/thought of me, to a crippling degree sometimes. I am a pleaser and an empath by nature. To do something like this for my self was a real flip of the script, and I am proud.

I can tell this was a long process through a tough and transitionary part of my journey and career as a commission based artist.

After 27 years of working on walls (among other things) my body has started letting me know I’ve gotta find some other ways to work. It’s not been easy and I’m still searching and knocking on many new doors. *Let me know if you want/need any videography or private lessons in art, murals, guitar, uke, diving, foiling… 😜

Another fascinating thing I can tell you is this was legitimate therapy for me. I did an experiment with my Garmin watch that tracks biometrics. I felt relaxed and very calm during these sessions and wanted to test that with quantifiable insights.

My heart rate would drop below my sleeping rate as soon as I was on the table, sometimes into the upper 40bpm.

I couldn’t believe it, so I tested it 2 more times with the same results. I came out of each of these sessions feeling renewed and invigorated at a time when I was VERY stressed with the projects I was involved in. I don’t think this happens for everyone getting tattooed, but it definitely happened for me.

…and I think that’s about all I wanna say.

After a year, we are still inspired, maybe more than ever. Our time away gave us so much by way of perspective and there was much to be inspired by. While we RnR’d we also RnD’d and took in the magic of new places, foods, drink, and people. We basked in the joy of each other’s company, celebrated our milestone, and met with a few of our favorites along the way. We’ve come back with big eyes, hungry hearts, and a vision of where to take us in the future. I think I speak for all of us in thanking you for appreciating what we’ve created, for the support you’ve continued to give us. Without your big, beautiful hearts and faces, we’d just be a room, a room with a lot of booze in it, a fantastic bartender, some fun lighting, and one of the best chefs on island, but still just a room. So thank you for making this one of the most fun years we’ve ever had. We’ve got mad love for you.

Our local food community may be small but she’s fierce! 3 cheers to the amazing restaurants that choose to use fresh local produce to make their magic, instead of simply bowing down to the Lords of Kirkland and Sysco. If you didn’t know, @fishbardeli has been an amazing supporter of ours since our first wee sprouts sprung forth! The menu has ALWAYS taken a grown here not flown here attitude, and the results are island style high vibe food for the soul. Excited that sister-friend bar @theflyingsaucerkauai is adding 🔥 to the locavore landscape in a very posh spice way. The creativity in taste and atmosphere is on stun! We are so stoked that Kapaa Town can boast both these delicious joints for ourselves. If you have yet to try either, hustle your little tushie down town and taste how yummy integrity, vision and art can be.
