POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

National parks are among the most important settings for science in the history of human inquiry.

That was not my claim when I first started writing Our Natural Lab: Remarkable Stories of Science from America’s National Parks five years ago. I simply had a collection of interesting stories, relatively unknown, that seemed worth telling considering our national parks welcome more than 300 million visits each year.

But after digging through papers, archives, photos, and podcasts — and kayaking sea caves, spelunking through lava tubes, and reforesting Joshua trees — that thesis became obvious. A handful of geology stories blossomed into a fully illustrated, 12-chapter book spanning physics, chemistry, climate science, ecology, biotechnology, anthropology, astronomy, psychology, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge, with a foreword from Dayton Duncan, writer of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea with Ken Burns.

I’ll be sharing these stories at events over the next year, starting at home in Fresno and hitting the road in 2027. Details, snippets, photos, and media features will land here as they come.

I’ll start with my favorite: the scientist who determined the age of the Earth helped save the world from lead poisoning thanks to a remote Yosemite canyon.

Learn about Clair Patterson’s story and more in Our Natural Lab, available now from Oxford University Press, major booksellers, and a growing list of independent stores. Link in bio.

Introducing: Channel Islands National Park. The “Galapagos of North America” due to their high concentration of unique, endemic plant and animal species.
This park is unique as the only way to get to the park is via boat. You can catch a ferry with Island Packers or your own boat. Entering the park is free.
I visited in October and went on a day trip to Santa Cruz island. We did the hike to Potato Harbor and enjoyed the beach at Scorpion beach. I would love to go back to do the kayaking to see sea caves and see another island within the park. Kayaking and snorkeling are very popular in the park.
This park is a unique one to check off your bucket list!

Anacapa Lighthouse

On this day in islands history:

“Runaway girl found. There arrived in Ventura a week or ten days ago, as passengers with Fazzio’s sloop from Anacapa Island, a man and a woman, or rather girl, who were members of a party who went to the island on the sloop Pearl of San Pedro. The party was on a seal hunt, but after arriving at the island, a high wind wrecked their boat and they were shipwrecked, so to speak, until taken off… All went well with the couple until last Saturday, when Marshall Cook received a telegram from Mrs. M. Richardson of Los Angeles asking if a young girl of a certain description had been seen in company with a man answering the description of the hero of the shipwreck. The Marshall was able to give the woman an affirmative answer… The girl proved to be the runaway daughter… The girl was induced to give up her lover and in company with her mother left on the train…”

The Channel Islands never fail to amaze. If you've never been to @channelislandsnps, consider this your sign to book that trip!

Here's how to do it:

⛴️ @islandpackers ferry services depart from @channelislandsharbor and @venturaharbor. (Booking ahead is always recommended.)

⛺️ If you want to stay overnight and camp, site reservations open up 6 month out via @recreation_gov. (It's rustic and no campfires are allowed. Visitors must carry all their gear to the campgrounds from the boat.)

🛶 @islandkayaking is the official outfitter for kayak, snorkeling and hiking tours. (Book ahead and check ferry reservations that align with your adventure timing.)

🌿 Bring ample food and water and be prepared to bring your waste home with you on the boat.

🐳 If you're content to see the islands without setting foot on land, book a whale watching excursion with @condorexpress out of Santa Barbara Harbor.

🦞🌿 Tuna crabs (a species of squat lobster) around the Channel Islands! These guys typically reside in warmer waters around Baja California and Mexico but are finding their way north into Southern California due to the spread of warmer waters from El Niño.

Great day out on the @spectrediveboat with @je.photovideo and @jennaunderwater. The tuna crabs were a cool treat!
