Poem: YNWA, A Karaoke Interlude

Fun fact: This was the only poem in #manorismbook🔴 that I had to FIGHT for. Legal pretty much were like, it can’t happen. I was very much like, “it has to, happen. They dnt understand why, but I do.”

On deadline day, I was faced with two options, it doesn’t make the book, or I re-write the entire poem. I asked how long I had to re-write it, I was told one hour. I was at the V&A that day, knowing I had a show in two hours time. I said, “cool”. They received the new and final version within 20 mins. If you believe in something enough, you’ll find a way towards the goal.

This poem, was that important to me. These were not just “song lyrics.” They were forms of survival, for a generation of Black Brits at various points in time. Before any Shakespeare, this was my guide in life, & craft.

A spiritual thing that lifts off the page, in pure celebration. Hence the title. We remain connected, even when we are alone.

Another fun fact: There are two different Haiku forms in the poem, for those who wanna chat shit.

I’m thankful to these artists, producers/ DJ’s / Event & Magazine curators for highlighting and in some cases, breaking us out of our realities. Giving us permission to just be.

Share on, do your thing ✨

So after years online talking on forums, and thanks to @preshie_baby for the idea, I started the Hyperfrank (Hyper About Grime) blog in early 2006. I mostly shared great finds, new 🔥 acts that deserved attention, BTS knowledge and photoshopped moments (now called memes) of what was going on at the time. I started it, so it was easier to share with friends on MSN messenger, what was coming out of this new scene but didn’t have hours to dig through the internet and talk with people and clip hours of pirate radio sets.

Around this time it was hard to see the music live. So I remember going to Dirty Canvas (a night held in the corner of ICA’s corridor) so I could review it for the blog. I took pictures so I could remember the order of performances on a cheap digital camera, I never intended to use them for anything else as uploading images let alone videos was very LONG these days, but for some reason I did and it all kicked off. Aside from DVDs and a few rare appearances in mags you weren’t really seeing these things so quickly after an event or candid moments.

Anyway, that led me to take my little 🚗 (🚂 and even ✈️) to start documenting nights across the country with people who also wanted to support (@dianajustsugacane, @josephjppatterson, @itscaseyamber and many more 🙏🏻✨). It led to breaking news, doing exclusive interviews and capturing the stories behind genre-defining moments. I pretty much do everything I learnt back then, for my job now within production in documentaries. I have grime and the scene to thank for that!

Major salutes to @chantellefiddy and @hattiecollins for giving me, and so many others, opportunities to get their first bylines in print. There were so many blockers in this era but you two really encouraged so many of us by sharing opportunities and showing how to transfer skills.

It really was a moment. A moment that brought so many strangers from across the country, and world, together.

I have about a million and one photos and clips from this time. That one day I’ll properly put out in a zine. For now, thanks @josephjppatterson for this 🔥 @complex_uk feature and acknowledging the era.
