I love irreverent comedy. But there’s a difference between challenging societal norms and operating from your own insecurities and biases under the guise of humor.

Being offensive doesn’t automatically make you clever. And sometimes, the joke just isn’t that funny.

Hate doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Narratives shape who we fear, blame, and exclude.

The question isn’t just who you hate. It’s who benefits from convincing you to hate them.

Cultural proximity ≠ cultural intelligence. @target + @converse offer a case study in what can happen when brands engage Black culture without fully understanding the context. #CulturalIntelligence #CulturalMarketing #BrandStrategy #BlackCulture #StrategicCommunications

Black women are organizational infrastructure. When they walk out the door, institutions lose far more than headcount.

Allow me to reintroduce myself. 👋🏾

I’m Terrence Chappell, Principal and Founder of @chappellcommunicationsgroup, a principal-led strategic communications consultancy helping social impact organizations and purpose-driven companies humanize complexity.

At a time when algorithms shape reality, opinions compete with facts, and visibility is too often mistaken for credibility, communications has become less about publishing content and more about building trust.

I help organizations transform complexity into clarity, translating their impact into stories that earn trust, shape perception, and inspire action by:

🟤 Building trust before it’s needed.
🟤 Elevating leaders whose impact deserves greater visibility.
🟤 Shaping public narratives instead of reacting to them.
🟤 Building communications systems that endure long after a campaign ends.

Swipe through to see what that work looks like in practice.

As we head into the second half of the year, I’m intentionally making room for a few new partnerships with organizations looking for a strategic communications thought partner.

If that sounds like your team, or someone comes to mind, I’d love to connect.

Or, as we say on the South Side...

Holla.

This Sunday, we celebrate. We protest. We dance. We remember. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

Pride is more than a parade, it’s a civic tradition rooted in the ongoing pursuit of freedom, dignity, and visibility.

Had a blast joining @spotlightwgn(and the incredible @hausofcage) to talk about the history of Pride and what this weekend means for our city.

Happy Pride, Chicago. 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾✨✨✨🪩🪩🪩

For a long time, one of my biggest fears at work wasn’t failure.

It was being perceived as the “angry” or “aggressive” Black man.

Early in my career, I worked primarily with white women, and I spent a lot of energy managing how I might be perceived. I softened my opinions. I second-guessed myself. I overanalyzed how I showed up in meetings.

And if I’m being honest, I was in my head more than I was leading.

In this clip from @disruptdeletereset, I talk about how that fear shaped my decision-making, and the lesson it taught me.

What I’ve learned is that leadership becomes difficult when you’re constantly performing a version of yourself that feels safer for everyone else.

Fear can be information.
But it can’t be the thing driving the car.

Every time I’ve made a decision from a place of fear, it has never worked out in my favor.

Thankfully, that’s a lesson I only needed to learn once.

🎙️ Grateful to Andréa Richardson and my longtime friend @tawills23 for creating space for a real conversation about leadership, identity, and growth.

Every time I’ve made a decision from a place of fear, it has never worked out in my favor.

That was one of the truths I shared on @disruptdeletereset with Andréa Richardson and my longtime friend @tawills23.

Taryn and I have been friends since college, and we’ve had front-row seats to each other’s professional evolution, from our time together at @burrell_comm to later working together as client-partners.

What I loved most about this conversation is that we didn’t just talk about leadership, we talked about the internal work that leadership requires. How fear can serve as information rather than a limitation. How self-awareness helps us move from managing to leading. And how emotions like anger, when understood instead of suppressed, can become a catalyst for growth, clarity, and more responsive leadership.

Grateful to Taryn and Andréa for creating space for a thoughtful, honest conversation, and for reminding me how affirming it is to reconnect with friends who have been present through the many iterations of yourself.

Graduation season hides many survival stories. 🎓🎓🎓

During our Public Higher Education Is a Public Good campaign production with the Coalition for Transforming Higher Education, one student shared that if they didn’t have to constantly worry about paying for college, they could finally “breathe.”

That answer continues to stay with me.

Behind many degrees are students balancing pressure, sacrifice, work, uncertainty, and the emotional weight of simply trying to make it to graduation.

College should expand opportunity, not force students into survival mode just to access it.

Public higher education changes lives. 🎓

But behind every degree is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and opportunity.

Our latest campaign with the Coalition for Transforming Higher Education Funding brings together the voices of students, university leaders, and legislators to share what’s at stake when higher education becomes harder to access. and what becomes possible when we invest in Illinois students and families.

Because this isn’t just about college. It’s about the future of Illinois.

Proud that @chappellcommunicationsgroup helped bring this narrative campaign to life through storytelling rooted in lived experience.

⏳ With the May 31 budget deadline approaching, now is the time to urge lawmakers to pass SB13/HB1581.

🎥 Watch the stories.
📢 Take action.

There are people who lead from proximity to power, and then there are people who lead while still carrying the weight of being vulnerable to the very systems they’re trying to change.

Last night’s conversation with @equalityill’s CEO Channyn Lynne Parker, moderated by Greg Harris and Mona Noriega, reminded me just how rare that kind of leadership truly is. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️

As Black trans women continue to meet the moment, even when the moment refuses to meet them with dignity, safety, or care, Channyn’s leadership is a reminder that courage is more than holding a title. It’s strategically taking up space, reshaping institutions, and creating pathways for others.

One of the most powerful moments from the discussion was her reflection on rebuilding trust with the people closest to the problem, not simply asking them to participate, but ensuring they have real pathways to power, protection, and decision-making.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Channyn personally and watching her evolution over the years, and I continue to be proud to be in her orbit.

Because proximity to power does not shield Black trans women from harm. Often, it increases the scrutiny, expectations, and risks they absorb so others might have a safer path forward.

And yet, they continue to show up with clarity, strategy, compassion, and conviction. #BlackTransLivesMatter #TransRightsAreHumanRights #LGBTQ #Leadership #SocialJustice
