POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Like an afternoon rain that we have been praying for because the land is so dry and the need is so great, a book comes along that quenches us and redeems us. One such collection is The Starry Field: A Gathering of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Poetry edited by Crisosto Apache and Julian Tanya.

new poem up at chjournal.com! Saina Ma’åse to @chrishoshnic & the team at @chapterhousejournal for the honor of being included in their Summer ‘26 issue, “Celestial Bodies: Honoring the Stars, the Moon, and Sky”. The issue is gorgeous and the writers/pieces I get to live with there are incredible.

This poem was inspired by Dr. Lee Kava’s seminar at this year’s @kundimanforever retreat titled, “How to Read an Ocean: Making Maps with Pacific Literature”. I’m eternally grateful to Lee, Kundiman, and the generous, brilliant communities I get to learn from and be a part of.

I waited until everyone left the room after Lee’s seminar was finished. I told myself not to cry when I walked up to thank her for the way she carried and celebrated all of our Pasifika poets/peoples/ancestors in that room. And then I bawled like a baby 😂😭 So this is right after a long hug, an ugly cry, and some big big laughs

slightly bigger/easier to read—go check out the whole issue at chjournal.com!

Deadline: June 30, 2026

Chapter House Journal's inaugural creative nonfiction prize launches with their Summer 2026 issue, Celestial Bodies: Honoring the Stars, the Moon, and Sky.

Inspired in part by the April 1, 2026 launch of NASA’s Artemis II, this issue invites Indigenous writers and storytellers to reflect on their place within the vast histories of Nihimá Nahasdzáán, Yethi’nisténha Ohóntsya, Uŋčí Makhá, and all their relations. Writers may submit one full-length piece or up to three shorter works (maximum 5,000 words total).

Submissions may explore connections between land, sky, memory, and cosmos, including Indigenous knowledge, star stories, and ancestral perspectives.

The winner will be selected by guest judge Cynthia J. Sylvester and awarded $250.

Feeling blessed to have read at the Four Corners Poetry Festival in Durango, Colorado and at Maria’s Bookshop. Durango is town that I grew up in and the place that shaped me. To read a book of poetry that I wrote is a gift that can’t be explained. Thank you to Esther Belin, Geneva Tolland, Jake Skeets, Laura Tohe, and Durango Public Library. I also want to thank my fellow readers Tanya Tyler, Kirbie Bennett, and Elliott Chemberlin. I am especially thankful to Jeanne Costello. She pulled all of the stops for me to read at Maria’s Bookstore. I will always remember this day. My first book reading in a bookstore!
