This was our final day out west! We took a quickie tour of San Francisco with Renee. We saw the Golden Gate Bridge, then went to the Legion of Honor art museum and browsed their galleries. After that we took some photos on one of the beautiful mosaic stairs in the city and got lunch near the beach. After lunch we walked out to the beach for a bit just to see it (was a bit chilly and windy but that’s ok!). Then we visited the Japanese Tea Garden in the Golden Gate Park. After that we hit one last vista point to see the city’s skyline, and then went to the pier to see seals barking on the docks and got pretty clear photos from the pier of Alcatraz. We’re back home now after a long flight the next day, but we really enjoyed our time on the west coast! Such a great experience for the kiddos and it was really good to see and hang with family we don’t see very often due to distance.

Our final stop will need to be split into two posts because we stayed an extra day. So after the drive from Eureka (last drive through the redwoods and entered rolling hills of northern California) we got to our next Air BnB in Dublin, a small suburb near Oakland/San Francisco. We chose this spot to visit Anni’s uncle Van and aunt Renee and cousins Kai and Mara who live in Pleasanton just next to Dublin. They came over to visit the night we arrived and were super kind and brought pizza for dinner so we could relax after the final drive. The next day, Renee and Kai came to pick us up and drive us to Monterey Bay to see the aquarium there. Along the way, we stopped in San Jose so Charlotte could see where her favorite hockey team plays. Then we hit the aquarium for the rest of the day until we drove back to their house in Pleasanton to meet up for dinner at their house with Van and Mara and also Renee’s mother who happened to also be in town. We had some amazing Thai food and walked down the street for ice cream to end the night for day one in the area! Sorry to Van we only seemed to get a photo of him walking from behind to get ice cream!! Hah! How did we not think to get more photos with Van?! Next time! We loved or visit with them!

So, after the drive from Eugene to Eureka, we spent the next day in Eureka, California visiting their zoo mainly for the sky walk among the Redwood and Sequoia trees they had there (side story, we also learned later that a lot of the scenes in Star Wars Return of the Jedi with the Ewoks were filmed in various redwood forests so we had to go and watch it when we got back to Memphis). It was beautiful. We also saw a few animals they had but we are spoiled on the zoo part with our Memphis Zoo which is really a nice zoo (proud). Anyway, we pet some goats, saw some other animals like a cute red panda, bald eagle and a few others. We then spent the rest of the day walking around Eureka on the boardwalk, had a late lunch, then visited some shops while we walked around. We had an amazing hot tub on a balcony with redwoods in the back yard of the Air BnB so we spent the rest of the evening there (obviously… I mean who wouldn’t)! The next morning we got up for our drive further into California to get to the Oakland/San Fran area. But along the way we visited our last redwood stop before we left the region. We saw more old trees, several of which had fallen and several that were hollowed out. This time we had sunshine and nicer weather so it was really cool to see them once in misty damp weather and once in sunny weather. Really cool experience all around. #explore #westcoast #redwoods #family #vacation

As we left Eugene towards California, we headed towards the Oregon coast to take the 101 to see some scenic routes. We woke up to a misty and gentle rain and dropping temperatures in the mid 50s. At first, it seemed like it might be a buzz kill, but as we got into the scenery it actually turned out to be perfect for the redwoods! Very mystic like. So the first few photos are once we got to the pacific coast in Oregon, we viewed face rock (which looks like a head coming up out of the water, almost like a celestial or something) and several other spots along the coast as the roads would wind around them. Stopped for lunch at a small but yummy place in Bandon, and continued on our journey until we began to encounter redwoods. I had mapped out a few places to see rock formations on the coast but got it backwards and ended up missing them and preferred not to backtrack as our destination was Eureka and we had some ways to go still. I mapped out a few more places for good redwood spots and I mean…. It was just so beautiful, I have too many photos! This is just a few but I’m definitely going to have to make another trip for more time on hikes deeper into the redwoods. It’s just magic. There’s a natural silence as soon as you step out of the car as if the Forrest was sound treated with studio panels that you can’t see. The bark on these trees is so soft and dense that I think they soak up all the sound. It’s definitely a sensory experience that pictures will never be able to convey. You NEED to go. Anyway, enjoy the redwood pictures we got in the mystical light rain! It was so cool! Eventually we made it to Eureka, which will be next along with more redwoods on a sunny day - so glad we got both conditions! OH! And as we were leaving the last 1500 year old big tree, we saw this patch of Elk just laying in the wet grass! So cool.

After the drive to Eugene (and seeing the Mount St. Helens and Silver Falls road trip from Seattle) we stopped for two nights in Eugene, Oregon. We spent the full day starting with a grueling hike (sorry to the ladies, I didn’t know there was an easier path along the other side) up Spencer Butte for AMAZING views! From the top you could see the three sisters peaks, and even Mount Hood even though we had passed it the day before quite some ways away (the lone peak zoomed in one of the photos is Mt. Hood from the top of Spencer Butte). The hike and top were absolutely beautiful and we encountered several extremely friendly (and fat) squirrels. It was clear people fed them often! 🤣 after the hike, we went to visit the 5th street market for a bit and had diner then back to our Air BnB which the boys found extremely fun with a game room and the backyard was extremely peaceful with a hot tub. After that long day we played games and chilled in the backyard before starting the next leg through the coast and redwoods the next day (coming soon in the next post)!

After leaving Seattle last week, we did a road trip down to Eugene, Oregon. Along the way, we wanted to hit some spots for sights. To avoid the Multnomah falls crowds, I decided to try out Silver Falls. Before that, I took a very short detour to a visitors center for Mt. St. Helens to get better pictures than what you can see from I-5. We also had lunch at a cooky island themed place on the docs at a place north of Portland on the Columbia River (not pictured) and then eventually hit silver falls. The trail there is over 7 miles and includes 9 waterfalls, but they said the tallest one and the only one you can walk behind was the first one you see on the trail and the easiest to get to. So that’s all we did since we had a destination further along. But most of these pictures are from those falls. It was so beautiful and I’m really glad we changed the plan from Multnomah to Silver Falls instead!
