Liyan received the gift of life through a family sacrifice, but this made her one of the most watched member of the imperial family. Through historical agreement, the realm agreed for the immortals to hide them from winged devil's and wider world. Liyan wants more for her people and decides to go against the immortals.

This is a enemies to lovers arc, with themes of betrayal, morality, deities, smoking mirrors and what family really means. There is a plot twist revealed about two thirds into the story which I did not see happening!

This is a standalone story, some every slow burn romantasy vibes between Liyan and the cold God of war. I liked their banter, and Liyan's snippets. I like the descriptions of clothing, living accommodations and the food; it made the scenes feel like a wuxian drama. I always love a good world map, and enjoyed the illustrations by @charisloke

This is my second @suelynntan book, maybe I will revisit the backlist....

The Girl with a Thousand Faces 🌃👻🌊🐈

Earlier this month my buddy @tonytakesonbooks invited me to join his monthly “Men Reading Women” book club over on Fable.

I was beyond excited when The Girl with a Thousand Faces by @sunyidean was chosen for June. I had just received @thebrokennbinding edition as part of their May SF&F subscription and loved any excuse to move it to the top of my TBR.

I’m about 2/3 through the book so far and absolutely loving it. I’ll say as little as possible to avoid any spoilers. The story unfolds in a gothic ghost filled Hong Kong in the 40s and 70s. Much of the story takes place in Kowloon Walled City, which has quickly become one of the coolest settings I’ve ever experienced in a book. I’m also ashamed to admit I didn’t know it really existed (you seriously need to go Google it and be amazed).

The story follows Mercy Chan, a badass middle-aged ghost talker with a ghost cat sidekick (apparently I’m all about sidekick cats now 🤣). It blends ancient Chinese folklore, local legends, triads, a wonderfully gothic atmosphere, generational trauma, vengeance, and forgotten memories into a very gripping story.

I can’t wait to see how it ends!

🌊 The Girl With A Thousand Faces by Sunyi Dean - TBB Edition 🌊

QOTD: What’s been a recent favourite book setting that you’ve come across?

If I had a penny for every time I’ve loved a book set in Kowloon Walled City I’d only have a few of them, but I’m definitely seeing a trend emerging. Even books only inspired by it like Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong had me in an absolute chokehold. Maybe it’s the claustrophobic feelings it gives you, or the strong community amongst its inhabitants. It gets me every time.

The Girl With A Thousand Faces was the book pick for TBB’s May SF+F box and I’m so happy to have such a stunning edition of this excellent book. I’ll admit that I was a little wary because the original cover was already gorgeous, but I think they did an incredible job with the art direction. It’s definitely a new fave TBB edition for me
