Recent Shenanigans

Cross well under way, started with 3rd at Brechin, before surviving the first Elite Race in Derby.

Knockburn and Falkirk weren’t the best of days but the form started showing again for Dundee last weekend with a 5th.

Onwards and upwards. Round 4 🔜

☀️ Back in the summer we visited artist Charles Fletcher in his studio in the former gun room of the Glen Estate near Traquair.

🖌️ We had a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation on the multiple subtle ways in which the past continues to inform the present.

📚 Charles makes work across painting, photography and film. He has also studied as a historian and written books on social and legal histories in the Cairngorms.

🌲 In particular, Charles spoke about engaging with the rich history of painting; about the performance of tradition (for example, through the Highland Games); about his research on local connections to transatlantic slavery; and about landscape as an archive or form of collective memory that sometimes cannot be unlocked, however hard we might try.

HUPcc Scottish Cyclocross Series off to a flyer in Dundee!

Dundee played host to the opening round of the newly named HUPcc Scottish Cyclocross Series, as Scotland’s best cross riders enjoyed some brilliant bar to bar racing to kick-start the six race series.

It was a day for file treads at Camperdown, a fast, powerful, punchy course proving a perfect transition back into cross, racers enjoy the very different Dundee conditions, and the new look course in a different part of the park.

Read all about it and check out the results on our website, or via our story

Don’t miss the chance to see the incredible paintings and film installation by Fine Art MA graduate @charlesfletchr .

📆 Opening Friday 18 August 6pm-8pm

📅 Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 August 12pm-5pm

📍 A23, LICA building, Lancaster University

Explore a dialogue between painting and film. The artwork delves into contested histories, stories (both remembered and misremembered) and ambiguities.

Charles developed the idea for his final work during a residency at @abbothall earlier in the year.

Shown here are stills from Charles Fletcher’s (@charlesfletcherart ) short film ‘Brotherstones’.

Charles’ artistic practice is all about understanding places and their human history, seeking to find his own place in the developing story of the land. His practice is very much research based, relying on stories, context, and history to produce artworks that he finds compelling, whether it be a painting, sound recording, or piece of writing.

‘Brotherstones’ is a film which reflects upon the passage of time. Some elements of our history are enduring and static whilst others are fleeting or in constant flux. Of the land, the film asks this question: is it wise to resist change?

Charles is an artist and academic researcher with a background in law and history. He currently lives and work in the Scottish Borders.

Congratulations Charles 💫

The exhibition runs 18-26 June 2022 at @custom_lane (Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 11-4) Film still showing two standing stones silhouetted in the landscape at sunset. Two arms reach out from either side of the stone closest to camera.
