✨Meet our Doctoral Candidates✨

🐾 Turning Animal Traces into Clues 🧬🕵🏻‍♀️

Meet Beatrice Natale (@beatricenatale), a wildlife forensic scientist in the making! From studying animal biology, genetics and wildlife conservation in Italy to conducting pioneering research in Prague, Beatrice’s journey is all about fighting wildlife crime with science. She is uncovering the secrets hidden in Traditional Chinese medicine artifacts, airborne DNA and animal traces collected on crime scenes or linked to poaching.

Her PhD focuses on developing innovative genetic methods and smart DNA preservation techniques to tackle challenges like DNA degradation, contamination and timeframe optimisation in forensic analysis. With tools like LAMP assays, DNA barcoding, portable labs, and NGS, she’s transforming wildlife forensic science, step by step.

⚖️👩‍🔬Science meets justice—one trace at a time.

🧬 How can DNA reveal the identity of an animal species? 🐾

In wildlife forensics, accurate species identification is essential for combating illegal wildlife trade, enforcing conservation laws, and supporting criminal investigations. 🌍⚖️

One of the most powerful tools used today is DNA barcoding- a molecular technique that enables scientists to identify species using short, standardized DNA sequences. From analyzing individual samples to untangling complex mixtures through DNA metabarcoding, these approaches are transforming the way wildlife evidence is examined. 🔬

As molecular technologies continue to advance, DNA-based methods are becoming faster, more accessible, and increasingly valuable for protecting biodiversity and strengthening forensic investigations.

👉 Swipe through to learn how DNA barcoding is helping forensic scientists identify animal species with confidence.

📢 A review co-authored by our doctoral candidate, @beatricenatale, has been published in Life:

🧬 "DNA Preservation in Vertebrate Samples: Insights from Forensic and Ancient Contexts"

Drawing on 202 selected references, the review examines methods for preserving biological samples and extracted DNA from human and non-human vertebrates, with a focus on forensic and ancient contexts.
🔬 No single preservation method suits every sample type or application. Sampling, handling, transport, storage, and downstream analyses all influence the choice of preservation strategy.

✍️ Authors: Beatrice Natale, Michal Pokorný, and Daniel Vaněk

Detecting very small earthquakes can be difficult, especially in places where no previous earthquakes are available to use as examples. Káldy et al. tested whether computer-generated earthquake signals could be used instead. In the earthquake-swarm region of West Bohemia, Czechia, their method successfully detected hundreds of real local earthquakes using synthetic signals based on a simple model of the Earth’s subsurface. Although it did not detect more small earthquakes than existing automated methods, it provided useful information about where earthquakes occurred and also allowed us to estimate their focal mechanisms—the way the rocks moved during an earthquake. This approach could therefore help establish seismic monitoring in regions where little or no previous earthquake activity is known.
