Language of Life is out today. The most vulnerable I have ever been creatively (or maybe just ever in general).

I wrote this film during a very difficult period of my life and never planned on revisiting it, let alone ever making it. I used to be so afraid to talk about grief and loss because to be honest, I didn’t know how to. It was something that felt scary and lonely and never ending. But to come together with such a kind and loving team to make a film about moving through unexpected change has taught me the importance of being open, and that acceptance is always a huge part of any tough situation.

My wonderful grandad passed away two days before this release. One of the last times I saw him was at our friends and family screening. A loss like this still feels incredibly sad, but so much more bearable because of the journey I have been on with this story over the last 15 months.

Since last December, this project has belonged only to our tiny team but in a couple of hours it will be out in the world.

When I wrote this film, I thought I would never feel like myself again. Now I know that couldn’t be further from the truth. More than anything, the friendships that have come from this project have been so special and have truly changed my life.

Thank you to every single person who has made this possible.

⭐️A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO ALL OUR CAST AND CREW⭐️

It’s been such a pleasure working with this talented bunch on a film that means so much to me and will hopefully connect with all of you too. When I wrote ‘The Boy’ not long after that court ruling in April, I was inspired by what I see as the prevailing attitude of our times: all sorts of different people coming together to face adversity and I think this group here are a wonderful representation of that; giving up their time, resources and skills to make the sort of film that can only be made with community spirit.

Looking forward to our last day of shooting! In the meantime, cancel that Netflix subscription and support your local artists and filmmakers🏳️‍⚧️❤️ -Isla
