Still coming down from the high of being able to attend the ATNS conference in Dallas, Texas @neuroplasticorg

This conference hit me hard. And it’s taken me a few days to realise why.

When your life becomes consumed with chronic pain or symptoms, it can be pretty hard to see a future. It’s waking up each day thinking, ‘another day of this’. Or, ‘maybe this is just what my life is like?’

Sitting at the end of this conference, listening to Howard Schubiner ask ‘what does recovery sound like?’ - and hearing the recovery stories of those around me - left me with uncontrollable tears running down my face. My years of pain had led me here.

Finding recovery from chronic pain has changed my life in so many ways. Once I recovered, my mission became to become the person I had needed when I was suffering.

Coming to this conference, all the way from NZ, was not simple. Being in a room filled with passionate practitioners, who all KNOW what PRT and EAET means (no explanations needed) was more relieving than I could have believed. Hearing the amazing research that is being done worldwide gives me so much hope for a better future for the millions of people worldwide who are suffering from chronic pain and persistent symptoms. Together, this movement of researchers, doctors, mental health clinicians and coaches - we are going to help so many people find a better future.

Meeting those who were instrumental in my own recovery was more special than I can say. My thanks to @hschubiner and @danbuglio especially.

Sneak peek- look how cute my slides turned out for my presentation at the ATNS conference in Dallas next week!

The ATNS conferences have been so fun to attend these last 2 years. The presentations are so well done, and there is time before and after to meet and talk to your favorite researchers, authors, podcasters etc in this field.

ATNS stands for the “Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms”. Meaning research based ways using neuroplasticity to treat and cure chronic pain and health conditions.

You may be surprised how many diagnoses can be changed by reprocessing or unlearning pain!

An injury can be real without being the full story.

Pain is influenced by more than what’s happening in the body. Even when someone has experienced an injury or surgery, the brain is also responding to psychological and social factors that can shape how pain is experienced.

That means recovery may take more than treating just the body. We have to understand the person as a whole and recognize all the factors that can influence pain.

Repost from: @charliemerrill “My brain knows better 😉. Clinical research is showing that 88-95% of back pain is neuroplastic. This means very real and intense pain in the absence of an injury or structural problem. While this doesn’t mean there are no physical changes (of course all of us have changes on MRI scan) - my back muscles were crazy tight, and my movement was quite altered - but these changes are not dangerous and are a result of a nervous system stuck in danger alarm. The way we treat this pain is nearly paradoxically opposite to the way most clinicians treat back pain. Regardless of how long you’ve been living with pain in your back her neck, consider rethinking your approach.” #kroniskesmerter #chronicpain #kronisktræthed #angst #brain

I asked a doctor, a PT, a coach, and a few therapists who all work with neuroplastic symptoms to say “Can we get curious about that sensation?” in different tones.

The assignment was simple.

The results were...not.

Still unclear why Charlie was yelling at me.

The human body is capable of far more than we think when we learn to regulate the nervous system . Finding a state of calm in the middle of stress allows you to tap into such a higher performance state . Game changer for me . Neuroplastic pain work too , teaching the body it’s safe elevates your life to a whole new level.
I’m lucky I’ve got the two best coaches in the world @theinjurypsychologist and @charliemerrill making sure I stay on the rock ♥️♥️♥️♥️💪💪💪💪 Mind set will carry you where your body cannot …

#jennyandjoescrazyadventures A moment of reflection. I always remind myself that this is my choice … to go head first into discomfort. My life hasn’t been easy. It may look like it’s pretty cool but most people don’t see my struggle . The chronic pain, the Lyme disease, the blood clot that almost took me out last year while climbing … and the cancer. I have lots of scars and I’m pretty “ well applied “ as my trainer said . But I’m not giving up. I owe it to myself to explore my limits …Not one of my climbs … or days has been free of pain. And honestly that sucks BUT It’s more about changing my relationship to it now @charliemerrill and finding strategies and value in the midst of struggle @theinjurypsychologist . I’m proud of myself for not backing down , even though I cry at times. I’ve got great support and know as long as I can continue to find gratitude even with discomfort, the world will not beat me. And I can still enjoy my mountains however that looks to me ♥️🙏
I’m sharing this because I heard someone say maybe God didn’t give you another day for you, but for someone else to be helped by what you are going through . One step at a time, even if it’s slow 😊, will get you on that mountain top💕💪
