“Links in a chain”
87 years ago, my first link was Archie and Lucille, who created a son that first loved and studied music. Small North Carolina newspapers gave him his head to create a unique link. Jet magazine called my employer to photograph a young preacher that night. Jet gave me the assignment to photograph Martin Luther King Jr. Two unknown young professionals together created a link. I loved Life magazine. Life had a story to do on a Wyoming sheep ranch. A link. Their question was, “can Burk ride a horse?”. I said yes and asked his friend across the street, who had a pony, if he would teach me how to ride. A link. Life gave me the story. Owners of the ranch decided at dusk to ride to the mountain top overlooking their ranch. A link. Assigned to a horse named Appleblossom. Yikes, we needed to get to supper soon! Spurred all the horses including Appleblossom (fastest of them all). A link. I never fell off! Kept thinking about that pony. A link. Life loved the ranch story. When I got back home, a bad hurricane was on the way and the Life photographers could not fly in. Life asked “Can the guy that’s good on a horse cover news?”. A link. When the next weeks edition of Life came out, the Burk nobody had ever heard of had many pages with hurricane in front and the sheep ranch in the back. BIG link. Life picture editor called Dallas to describe Burk. Small, skinny, and can hardly speak good english. We shook hands and told me to have a seat on the couch. Before I could reach the couch, he asked “Do you want to be staff or contract at Life?” I replied, “Contract, to own the rights”. A link. They sent me to Chicago. The next link was joining Magnum Photos, was there for 18 years. . Back to North Carolina to Wilson, then to Brier Pointe Community in Morrisville, NC. A link. Here I shall live till I die and continue to constantly do new work. Books, museum shows, galleries, have all provided links.
On instagram, we see the striking eye of Charlotte Theis. Using our Canon, paired with our Macro 100mm lens proved worthwhile. New tools offer exciting new vision. burk@burkuzzle.com Brier Pointe, Morrisville.
