𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗝𝗶𝗺 𝗠𝗰𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵! 👋🏼

Jim lives right here in Washington with his wife, Carrie, and dog, Spinach. He is the head of the Special Education Department at @region12schools Shepaug Valley High School, and has been an EMT with Washington Ambulance for 11 years and counting. In his free time, Jim and his family enjoy adventuring in the great outdoors—hiking, biking, running, paddling, and cross-country skiing. He also plays a few different musical instruments, including the guitar.

How did Jim become involved with the park? “As is the case with many plans, mine started in a bar, @owlnewpreston ,” Jim explained. While there, then park board member @charms345 and Pastor Robyn Grey approached Jim to ask if he would volunteer to lead a monthly informal music jam session, called a hootenanny, during the park’s @washingtonctfarmersmarket He said yes!

During farmers market season, you’ll find Jim leading the monthly hootenanny with his guitar in hand and a few other instruments he brings along for folks to pick up and play. “I bring a few guitars, a mandolin, a ukulele, etc. for folks to play along if they want,” Jim said. “Many times, we’ll have folks who really know how to play rip it up while the rest of us play the chords,” he said, noting that all skill levels are welcome to join.

What’s Jim’s favorite part of the park? “I love the way that the park brings people together and creates community, in pretty much everything it does,” he summed up.

Meet Christine Armstrong @charms345 ! Chrissy, as she goes by around the park, serves on our board of trustees and is a member of the sustainability committee.

Born in Madrid, Spain and raised in Texas, she moved to New York City to pursue her career in finance before settling as a full-time resident with her family in a house built circa 1780 in the hamlet of New Preston about 11 years ago.

As a founding member of our sustainability committee, she has been instrumental in helping us to reduce our carbon footprint at the park.

"I’ve been interested in sustainability for years, and even more so since I moved full time to Washington. There are an impressive number of local environmental and conservation groups here, and in a small town like ours, where people are engaged and organized, the impact of sustainability efforts is really measurable and well-reported. I think that has inspired me to be even more conscious and active," she explained.

Most recently, Chrissy brought to fruition a public recycling receptacle at the park. "The town of Washington does a great job of curbside recycling, but surprisingly, there has never been a public recycling receptacle in the central Washington Depot commercial area, except for one out-of-the-way bin at the pavilion near Washington Primary School. It felt like an easy need to fill and the idea was enthusiastically received by town and park leadership," she said.

And Chrissy's favorite aspect of the park? "The people!" she exclaimed. "I love the people who come to the park to enthusiastically participate in events, especially the kids. And the fact that so many people really do gather at the park (which is our mission) is something that makes being a trustee very gratifying," she summed up.
