The Archeology of Trinity
How Are Buttons Made From Shells?
Thanks to collections done at the Trinity Archaeology site, we have multiple shell buttons in our archive. These buttons highlight a unique era of fashion at the turn of the 20th century, known as the Edwardian Era. With the introduction of German immigrant (John Boepple) to Iowa, the mass production of Mother of Pearl buttons flooded the fashion industry, making their way to San Antonio. Shell buttons, specifically Mother of Pearl were often made in a process of four stages at the turn of the 20th century: first the shells collected were prepared by being stripped by machines and ground to a flat surface, second the shells were cut with various button shapes, third the buttons were engraved with patterns and dyed a range of colors, lastly the buttons were sewn onto display cards for sale. Have you seen buttons on display cards like the one shown? The buttons were discovered at the dig site in San Antonio, showing the popularity of the design at the beginning of the 1900’s across the US. Have you seen Mother of Pearl buttons on vintage clothes around San Antonio, if so they might date from this time period. The majority of the Mother of Pearl buttons were produced and shipped from Muscatine, Iowa (as seen on the postcard), further showing the apparent trade in the US at the time.
