The Jordan River National Fish Hatchery is one of northern Michigan’s most important fisheries conservation facilities. Operated by the , the hatchery was established in the early 1960s and began producing fish in 1965 as part of a major effort to restore native fish populations in the Great Lakes. Located in the scenic Jordan River Valley near Elmira, the hatchery raises more than 3 million fish annually, including lake trout, cisco, brook trout, and rainbow trout. These fish are stocked into Lakes Michigan and Huron to support restoration of native species and recreational fisheries. Lake trout restoration has been especially important because populations were devastated during the mid-20th century by overfishing, habitat degradation, and invasive sea lamprey. The hatchery has become a major player in restoring cisco populations in the Great Lakes. Cisco were once abundant and critical to the food web, serving as forage for species like lake trout. By the 1950s, many populations had collapsed. In 2018, the hatchery completed a modern recirculating aquaculture facility specifically designed to help restore cisco in Lake Huron and surrounding waters. Beyond fish production, the hatchery works closely with tribal nations, state agencies, and conservation groups throughout the Great Lakes region. It provides fish for treaty waters and supports youth fishing and educational programs with the . For visitors, the hatchery is open year-round and is a favorite stop for anglers, hikers, birdwatchers, and families exploring the Jordan Valley. You can walk around the raceways, see fish from egg stage to adulthood, picnic on the grounds, and access nearby hiking trails connected to the Jordan River Pathway. Bald eagles, deer, wild turkeys, and even snowy owls are occasionally seen there. Many anglers in northern Michigan don’t realize how connected the hatchery is to the region’s fishing heritage. The lake trout and cisco raised there help sustain the Great Lakes ecosystem and support fisheries that influence rivers and communities across northern Michigan.
