POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I’ve struggled with what to share this year to mark the anniversary of 9/11. I lived in New York City. I changed my routine that morning and ended up with a heartbreaking view of the collapse from the Manhattan Bridge pedestrian walkway.

A mile away from the Towers and the sound of shattering glass, steel, concrete and more remains etched in my memory.

On that darkest day, my boyfriend of four months walked to my Prospect Heights apartment from his Manhattan office on 7th/29th. It was in the hallway in the apartment that day that we first said “I love you”

We are married and still going strong 25 years later.

Life is precious. Our time here is fleeting. One of the lessons from that day that I carry in my 9/11 suitcase alongside the grief and trauma is that love can still shine in darkness. We see it in the heroic acts of that day and the compassion displayed by the citizens of New York in the time after.

What are you waiting for? Say the words, do the thing, be who you are meant to be. We never know how long we will be here.

It’s been a long time coming!

I’m moving around in public (most public places) without the assistance of my cane!

15 months of crutches and canes and driving over walking.

The muscles and tendons are still rebuilding strength. It’s been amazing to realize how much effort and coordination goes into something we take for granted.

Which leads me to the tremendous gratitude to my surgeon, PT, husband @chaslab, colleagues, friends and family who have continued to support me on this recovery.

I said when it happened, I wanted my life back. It’s not fully there yet but this represents another “step” in the right direction!

And NYC is the perfect place to practice walking! #recovery #walking #kneecapinjury #patiencetoprogress

Solitaire climbed on my lap and then Domino wanted to squeeze in too.

When Charles made a noise to get their attention it caught my attention too. 😉

Lots of purring and love from these two.
Happy Caturday!

What an incredible day!
I’m loving this lunar flyby with the Artemis II mission and the Integrity capsule.

With so much conflict, division and loneliness going on in the world, it’s inspiring to see what humanity is capable of when we work together with purpose.

So inspiring! Thanks @nasaartemis 🙏

I wrote more about what this means and the choice we have before us in the latest edition of Reading Between the Lines. Link in the linktree in bio.

Can’t believe pub day, 2-22-22 is four years ago!
I’ve learned 4 lessons in this time.
1 - this is a marathon that starts at pub day
100 podcasts
25 TV spots
75 talks & trainings
12 people coached 1:1
Lots of work that commences on launch day.

2 - be generous with time - invest in others and it comes back to you while improving us all

3 - you can make a difference in the world
I love hearing from readers and how the stories and tips have changed their lives. Parents in particular have seen results by using the phrase “tell me more about that” instead of asking “why”

4 - word of mouth is the best marketing for books
The growth I’ve achieved has come from this community, sharing the book and the presentations with friends and colleagues.

My birthday wish is an ask from everyone here.

If you’ve read the book, please suggest it to a friend or reading group. If you’ve can gift a copy, that’d be wonderful

Spread the word by putting a copy in a Little Library near you.

If you’ve read are on the fence, at the 🔗 in bio you can find more on the book, it’s in all the retailers and all the formats.

And most immediately, like, comment and share on this reel.

❤️🙏 to this community and all the friends and family who have been generous with your support. Couldn’t have done it without you!

When cruelty shows up, so must compassion.

Our neighbor’s daughter came back from sleepaway camp in tears this week.

Some boys called her the N-word and mocked her natural, beautiful 4C hair. This beautiful 5th grade girl was heartbroken. Her parents were beside themselves. And we were too.

As we texted with her parents, we shared how we see her. We love her. She is radiant and smart. And her natural hair is fab-u-lous!

I also shared how she reminds us of a good friend who is one of the most beautiful human beings we know, and also rocks her natural hair.

As I was texting back and forth with the neighbors, the emotional empathy I was feeling for their daughter brought tears to my eyes.

I know that hurt. I’ve lived it.

Her experience took me right back to my own fifth-grade pain—the bullying, the isolation, being told that I didn’t belong. It took over 35 years for me to fully understand that cruelty says more about the person dishing it out than the one receiving it.

Sadly, cruelty doesn’t stop with childhood. It can show up in the workplace, in side comments, in silence, in policies and posturing.

This Pride Month, and always, please be mindful of how you show up. Your words and actions can either add to someone’s pain or help them feel seen and safe. Your words and actions are witnessed by others and if they look up to you, then they feel permission to behave in the same way. Good or bad.

At the end of our text thread, I shared a photo of our friend - one of her engagement pics where she looked particularly stunning. The neighbor shared it with their daughter and our words. I hope it helped ease her pain to both know how highly we think of her and that there are so many amazing women for her to look to for inspiration.

If this speaks to you, drop a ❤️ below. And if you’re carrying a story like this, my DMs are open. I’m here to listen.
