From bee wings at UCSB to a Ph.D. at UC Berkeley.

Jorge De la Cruz (@cultured.bacteria) has begun his doctorate in integrative biology at UC Berkeley. An NSF Graduate Research Fellowship recipient, he plans to study wing evolution and the ecological factors shaping animal form.

At UCSB’s Cheadle Center (@cheadlecenter), the zoology graduate worked with Katja Seltmann in the Big-Bee Lab, studying bee wings and what their structure reveals about evolution. Fieldwork on Santa Cruz Island and in the Sierra Nevada helped prepare him to pursue research questions of his own.

Community helped make that path possible. After first visiting the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory through FUERTE, Jorge later returned to lead a field trip as president of UCSB’s SEEDS chapter, with support from peers and mentors.

“Making connections is not just about navigating academia but helping guide others as well.”

Congratulations, Jorge!

Jorge’s story closes our Class of 2026 Where Science Takes Us series. Thank you to every student who shared their experiences, aspirations and advice with us. Explore more stories in our 2026 Grads Highlight.
