Opening tonight!

My next curated project, ‘Wabi Sabi: Untangling the Meaning of Beauty’ opens at Paul Smith Space in Mayfair on Thursday, 4th June from 6 to 8pm.

Showcasing the work of nine female-identifying artists who seek beauty in balance and harmony as well as the imperfection of life:

Grace Mattingly
Harriet Gillett
Lindsey Mendick
Sophie von Hellermann
Susie Green

Utilising a spare organic line, a pale palette, or a judicious use of negative space, these artists construct harbours of solace in their works in direct contrast to our increasingly chaotic time on planet Earth. This economy of line, form and composition in the works represents an understated aesthetics
that could be interpreted as ‘wabi-sabi’.

In many ways, the modest form of expression employed by each artist draws similarities to ikebana - the single flower in a vase that everyone bows to before taking their place at the tea ceremony table. And like the tea ceremony, these artworks emphasise direct experience over verbal explanation, just
as wabi-sabi is best understood in a non-verbal experiential way.

Painting and sculpting are activities, ones just like the ancient Japanese arts of the tea ceremony, and the cultivation of bonsai. Like the tranquil simplicity found in these activities, the beauty sought by these nine artists is a state of mind, reminding us to slow down and take comfort in the natural beauty
around us, however imperfect or impermanent it may be.

Encontré a mi artista favorita y de verdad lo sentí como un reflejo de mi misma, es una mirada de la mujer pero cero masculinizada creo plasma súper bien la vulnerabilidad que si tenemos desde niñas por eso se siente como un recuerdo muy nostálgico pero también libre no tan definido. "Una figura casi eterna, liberada del tiempo". Amo los tonos que usa que se ven como empolvados, gris, azul, amarillo, para mí es la paleta de colores más perfecta que existe. 🐦 Le quise literal dedicar un post por si no la conocían yo no entiendo como nunca había escuchado de ella, está viva y vive en Paris y creo es súper importante valorar artistas actuales. Se nota demasiado Paris en sus obras también más como una atmósfera "no es un cuadro sobre Paris, es un cuadro para recordar Paris".

Espero ir a su Expo y comprarme el libro aunque sea mano...

How can one express feminist and social commitment through painting? How can one respond to everyday life while remaining so deeply rooted in art history and in dialogue with the masters of the past? These are the questions Chechu Álava poses, without imposing answers, in her second solo exhibition at Xippas Gallery in Paris.

Other works, smaller in scale or in a vertical, phone-like format, reflect the artist’s presence in relation to the world and to social media. Questioning the jarring proximity between makeup tutorials and images of children mutilated by various conflicts, she has seized upon this tragic reality and the time-consuming trivialities that sadly inhabit our daily lives. Through gracefully graduated tones, sometimes highlighted with gold or an almost fluorescent color, and her subtly blurred brushwork, she removes immediate narrative, making the original medium almost disappear.
