NEXT WEEK: Before the listening session, we begin with a blessing. At DEEP CUTS on 9/17, artist Diana Che will create an altar for the evening, followed by East Wind Lion Dance Troupe as we gather just ahead of Mid-Autumn Festival / Tết Trung Thu.

We wanted to underscore the night by marking the room together. A moment to honor what came before us, celebrate where we are + make space for what’s still ahead! Then we turn up the music. :)

I can’t believe it’s already been a year since my thesis show. It was a magical night, not because of the work, but because of the people who brought it to life with their presence.

It’s not always easy being new in a city, but I never felt like a foreigner in L.A. The most beautiful thing I learned in the City of Angels is the generosity of being welcomed, and the importance of feeling held by a community. I felt that from the very beginning.

Gracias amigxs! I miss you all so much.

This week in D301: Drawing upon the complex narratives of her Vietnamese-American upbringing, Where Angels Fear to Tread is a mid-residency exhibition by Diana Chế that invites viewers into a liminal space informed by memory, loss, and hope. Bamboo shades, emblems of resilience and utility throughout Vietnamese households, are reconfigured into bifacial vessels, carrying the persistence of unfulfilled and displaced pasts into ghostly presence. A constellation of ink landscape drawings cascade across the walls, bearing witness to the nonlinear and fragmented narratives of war. The installation mobilizes cultural elements to trace diasporic homemaking as a practice of survival, guided by belief, remembrance, and ritual.

2025 taught me all the lessons I’d been too stubborn to face. Post-grad, my first year as a full-time artist, and my first year grieving an unimaginable loss — I wanted so desperately to feel successful, but I came out with something much better. I’m left reminiscing and deeply appreciative of the community that has built me and continued to support me. I’ve met lifelong relationships, connected with my roots more than ever, and I feel so lucky to have traveled and found myself through it all.

Every project has only made me realize how important my vision for Heirloom has become, and how much I love uplifting the artists I believe in along the way. I hope to continue creating, communing, and leaving lasting, tender moments with myself and everyone around me.

Thank you so much to everyone who continues to support me, and to the community I’ve been able to lean on. <3

[Exclusive Clip!!] Anh Tài, the OG, or some in our community call him the godfather of Viet New Wave, began a movement as one of the first Viet diaspora musicians to take eurodisco tracks and reinterpret them using Vietnamese lyrics in place of English ones. This made the music accessible for young Viet refugees / music lovers in in Southern California and beyond.

This sparked a movement for the Vietnamese diasporic music scene globally, leading to New Wave's continued legacy today.

FYI — That’s him with another Việt diaspora icon, Miss Trizzie Phuong Trinh! 💕 straight off the New Wave cutting room floor!!! Stay tuned for more.
