The Cheese Board pizza line looks brutal until 11:30, when the first round comes out and it starts moving fast. Seven East Bay walk-ups where the wait is the price of admission.

1. Cheese Board Pizza. 1512 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley. Show up at 11:30, not noon; one rotating pizza a day and a line that keeps moving. @cheeseboardcoll
2. Boichik Bagels. 3170 College Ave, Berkeley. The closest the Bay has come to a real New York bagel, open daily from 7:30am to 1:30pm. @boichikbagels
3. Bake Sum. 3249 Grand Ave, Oakland. The okonomiyaki danish, pandan milk buns, and mochi muffins are the move here. @bakesumpastries
4. Fentons Creamery. 4226 Piedmont Ave, Oakland. Open since 1894, and the black and tan sundae is the order worth the weekend wait. @fentons_creamery
5. Burma Superstar. 4721 Telegraph Ave, Oakland. Tea leaf salad and coconut chicken noodle soup, walk-ins only, so the line is the reservation. @burmasuperstar
6. Acme Bread. 1601 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley. Loaves, rolls, and pastries stacked high; locals say the line is always there and moves fast. @acmebreadcompany
7. Pizzaiolo. 5008 Telegraph Ave, Oakland. Wood-fired pizza in Temescal, open since 2005; go early or expect the wait. @pizzaiolooakland

Seven worth standing in line for: Cheese Board, Boichik, Bake Sum, Fentons, Burma Superstar, Acme, and Pizzaiolo. Which line do you actually wait in?

This is a full East Bay food run in one post - Shattuck Ave in Berkeley, College Ave by the Rockridge border, Grand Ave in Oakland, Piedmont Ave, and Telegraph Ave through Temescal. Pizza, bagels, pastries, ice cream, Burmese, bread, and more pizza, all within a few miles of each other. Save this for a weekend morning when you are hungry and patient, because every one of these lines means something good is at the other end.

Heinold's First and Last Chance has poured in the same slanted-floor shack by the Oakland estuary since 1883. Eight East Bay institutions that outlasted everything around them.

1. Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. 48 Webster St, Oakland. Pouring since 1883, the floor still tilted from the 1906 quake.
2. Fentons Creamery. 4226 Piedmont Ave, Oakland. Open since 1894, five generations in, the black and tan sundae theirs. @fentons_creamery
3. Chez Panisse. 1517 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley. Alice Waters since 1971, the restaurant that built California cuisine. @chezpanisse
4. Cheese Board Collective. 1504 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley. Worker-owned since 1971, one rotating pizza a day and a line that always moves. @cheeseboardcoll
5. Yoshi's. 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland. A jazz club and Japanese kitchen since 1972, two sets a night. @yoshis_oak
6. Berkeley Bowl. 2020 Oregon St, Berkeley. An independent grocery since 1977 whose produce aisles became a legend. @berkeleybowl
7. Acme Bread. 1601 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley. Steve Sullivan since 1983, and the walnut levain sells out by 11am on Saturdays. @acmebreadcompany
8. Caffe Strada. 2300 College Ave, Berkeley. A campus institution since 1989, with a heated fireplace patio and a white hot chocolate regulars swear by. @caffestradaberkeley

Eight that outlasted everything: Heinold's, Fentons, Chez Panisse, the Cheese Board, Yoshi's, Berkeley Bowl, Acme, and Caffe Strada. Which one would you defend in an argument?

Oakland and Berkeley history you can still walk into today - Jack London Square, Piedmont Avenue, the Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck, and the UC Berkeley campus edge, all in one East Bay run. Every stop on this list is open right now, so this is a this-weekend plan, not a someday plan.

The Cheese Board Collective has been worker owned on Shattuck since 1971, and the line at four is for the pizza, not the cheese. Six East Bay cheese counters worth the gift.

The Cheese Board Collective. 1504 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley. Worker owned since 1971, with a cheese counter that will cut and sample anything you are weighing. IG @cheeseboardcoll

Market Hall Foods. 5655 College Ave, Oakland. The Rockridge cheese and charcuterie hall since 1987, home of the Pasta Shop counter. IG @markethallfoods

Raxakoul Coffee and Cheese. 1578 Hopkins St, Berkeley. A family run shop by Monterey Market pairing a serious cheese case with house roasted coffee, leave with a wedge and a bag of beans.

Berkeley Bowl. 2020 Oregon St, Berkeley. The cheese counter inside the legendary market, where the cutters will sample anything you are considering. IG @berkeleybowl

Farmstead Cheeses and Wines. 1650 Park St, Alameda. A gift box counter in the Alameda Marketplace, cheese paired with a bottle from the back room. IG @farmsteadwines

Star Grocery. 3068 Claremont Ave, Berkeley. A neighborhood market since 1922 with a Tomales Bay and Cowgirl Creamery counter that is walking distance picnic gold.

Six East Bay cheese counters: the Cheese Board, Market Hall, Raxakoul, Berkeley Bowl, Farmstead in Alameda, and Star Grocery. Who are you building the board for?

Berkeley, Oakland and Alameda cheese counters make an easy East Bay day trip for a picnic board, a gift box, or a weekend market run. Start on Shattuck Ave in Berkeley, swing through Rockridge on College Ave, then finish in Alameda on Park St. Every stop here is open now and verified in this run.

Bring a small cooler if you are chaining all six in one run, ask each counter what is ripe right now, and let them cut a taste before you commit to a wedge.

A Berkeley classic that’s been around since 1971 🍕🌱

Cheese Board Collective Pizzeria is one of those Bay Area spots that feels like an experience, not just a meal.

They make a fresh, thin, hand-spun sourdough pizza with organic and locally sourced ingredients, and the pizza and salad change every day. Their regular pizza is always meat-free, and they also offer a vegan whole-pizza option. 🌱

You can also get their famous green sauce, roasted garlic, salads, cookies and soft-serve ice cream. 🍕🥗🍪🍦

And yes, there’s live music while you wait and eat! 🎶 The line can get pretty long and sometimes stretches down the block, but it moves quickly. Seating is first come, first served.

🚗 Parking: Street parking around Shattuck Ave can be difficult, especially during busy hours, so give yourself some extra time.

⏰ Pizzeria hours:
Tue: 11:30 AM–2:30 PM
Wed–Sat: 11:30 AM–2:30 PM & 4:30–8 PM
Sun & Mon: Closed

so we thought that co-op month was like some weird booster thing started by Big Co-op or like the NPIC in the last couple of decades...turns out it's actually a really deeply rooted history, tracing back to early immigrant-settlers-farmers in Minnesota who understood themselves as part of a big labor movement that included both co-ops and unions...

...turns out the collective actions we take to promote economic democracy have reverberating impacts long after us....ANYWAY. aren't you here to read about CO-OP EVENTS??

SO much fun exploring @noshaberkeley with @edibleexcursions! 🤎

We ate our way through some of the neighborhood’s must-try spots, with stops for the pastrami sandwich at @sauls_delicatessen, pizza at the @cheeseboardcoll , @gregoirerestaurant famous potato balls, and so much more. 🤤

It’s such a fun way to experience Berkeley through its food and discover some local favorites along the way. We were definitely full by the end of the tour… 10/10 would do it again! 🍕🥪✨

we did it joe!!!!!!! the Bay Area sent 30+ delegates to Boston for the National Worker Cooperative Conference…plz enjoy the extremely precious evidence!!

worker-owners, co-op developers, & members of the broader community across the Bay came together…on the other side of the country, lol. y’all should do it HERE more often too!!! jk but it WAS also really sweet to meet with cooperators from around the country to learn from each other, build power, and dream about what comes next for our slice of the labor movement 💛

this year’s theme was “Owning Our Future” — and uhhh that’s a big theme. we got into the standards, like how do we practice democracy at work, navigate conflict, support each other’s businesses. But we also heard from some of the forefront of new co-op corporate frameworks and the burgeoning blueprint of OTO (Opportunity to Own), where workers get priority to buy the business from its previous ownership (SF and @theselc are leaders here!).

and ya…it was also really cute and fun!! big ups to @usfwc & @wearedawi for hosting and all our beloved co-op groups who made the trek:

sooooo let’s unpack it together!! went to Boston and wanna process? stayed home and want the Inside Scoop?? come drink beers and gossip with your fellow co-op’ers at Degrees Plato in Oakland this Thursday, October 1st, 5:30–7pm.

bring your hot takes, your questions, and your co-op-curious friends. let’s talk about what we’re bringing back to the Bay!! RSVP: nobawc.org/debrief 🍻 and in b*o
