@chef.jaimito @thatbeerplacehq - Chester

My worst habit at the moment is going to all of James’s menus and then telling you about it when it’s finished and it’s too late for you to eat it. Sucks to be you I guess cos this Mexican menu was good as hell. Highlights include all of it, but I particularly want to commend James for being able to make a taco out of corn that doesn’t disintegrate when you look at it. Belter. #boothonfood

Jaimito's - That Beer Place, 116 Foregate St, Chester CH1 1HB📍

I have been meaning to swing by the incredible @thatbeerplacehq to try some of the food being prepared by the now resident @chef.jaimito

Every time I have seen a menu it has looked incredible and I have always felt like I have missed out by not making the effort to go and try it. That had to change so this weekend a concerted effort was made and, whilst I am now full of regret for not having been sooner, I am so glad that it was! The food was absolutely incredible!

I was fortunate enough to get my order in before anything ran out which meant I got to try pretty much everything on the menu. It was all worthy of shouting about but some particular highlights were the pork al pastor tacos, the crispy new potatoes and of course the esquites (recommended by the chef himself!). I'm also a sucker for a sausage roll so a mexican inspired chorizo verde option was ticking all the right boxes.

It would of course be remiss of me not to acknowledge the stunning cider and perry available from That Beer Place which we had to accompany the food.

If you are ever feeling like you want some great food and drink but in a really laid back environment, get yourself down to That Beer Place, you won't regret it!

WE MADE IT // 4 YEARS ON FOREGATE

We’ve officially been here longer than we were in the old Market!

We still get it now…
“So… do you regret not going in the new market?”
“We weren’t sure it would work at this end of town…”

Fair enough. At times, we weren’t sure either.

Moving here was a calculated leap of faith. We stuck ourselves right out on the end of town in what is essentially a big concrete bunker, saved only by gloriously big windows and a patio perfect for people watching.

We started with a giddy 'concept' phase (even manifesting the glitter ball 🪩).

Then a “WTF have we done?” build phase.

Back in the old Market, we had a simple idea. Stock the best beer we could get our hands on and give our team as much knowledge as possible to sell it. We’d never poured a pint before, but we knew our stuff. A posh off licence with a few taps… and it worked.

Then, as the old market we dearly loved came to an end, we put our big pants on.

Foregate meant going bigger. More beers, more ciders, more taps. But more importantly, doing things our way and getting closer to you.

Over the last four years, our gaff has become more than somewhere to drink. It’s fostered so many beautiful friendships, become home to so many Clubs and Groups, a place for artists, DJs, comedians, parties, engagements, birthdays and plenty of (some great, some not so great) ideas.

We’ve hosted tap takeovers and tastings, packed out comedy nights and dancefloors, started Chester Craft Beer Expo at Storyhouse, taken the bar out to festivals, weddings and Chester Pride, and somewhere along the way TBP turned into something bigger, something we’re ridiculously proud of.

Along the way, we’ve picked up National Cider Pub of the Year 2024, followed it up as National Runner Up 2025, mastered cask beer, and most recently brought Jaimitos in for some seriously good food to go with your delicious drinks.

Not everything worked first time. Some of it felt completely unmanageable (hospitality ain't getting any easier!)

But none of it would have happened if we'd stayed in our comfort zone.

So yeah... we think we made the right move.

Thanks for being part of it ❤️
(Still never got that tiger though)

It feels unkind to show you this, because the bad news is that the kebab menu from James that you see before you is no longer available. The good news is that James is as permanent a fixture at That Beer Place as the Paddington statue outside and he’s moved onto Mexican for a month, which happens to be his specialty.

In the meantime fix your eyes on a lamb baharat kebab and a chicken kebab, accompanied with James’s take on cheesy chips: hash browns topped with rarebit and served with gravy mayonnaise. To round things out, pickled onion monster munch battered onion rings. A phrase that rings out absolutely reminiscent of Almost Famous burgers in 2012 and throws me back to how much it slapped. Lovely stuff.

I'd like to put on record my personal apology to both Mr James Gavin (Jaimito) and everyone at That Beer Place. As almost every place I've posted about on here has subsequently closed. Like the dreaded vote of confidence for a football manager. Or that weird time when someone famous would die every time Aaron Ramsey scored a goal. Although he boxed off a few baddies during that. Let me know if there's somewhere in town you want out of business. I'll do a post.

It's great when we have genuinely brilliant people to champion in this city. Doing the best they can do at the thing they do. Jaimito is slinging some outstanding food and somehow it's affordable. The theme changes monthly. Think posh takeaway. If @boothonfood rates it then you need to get involved. It's here, in our city.

That Beer Place is obviously super. Sometimes a community pub is throwing shade. This is a community hub. So many events on the board, almost suspiciously friendly. Reckon they'd lend you their van if you asked. A true asset to the city. Our city.

Chinese Takeaway to the Max 👌🏼🤤

@thatbeerplacehq is well known for its epic array of craft beers & ciders combined with the chilled vibe and super friendly staff, but now it also has some pretty epic snacks courtesy of @chef.jaimito operating out of their guest kitchen upstairs! 👌🏼 Sadly it took me until the last weekend of the Chinese takeaway menu to pull myself together and give it a try but I can honestly say it was some of the best Chinese food I’ve had for a long time and the chicken balls were next level 👌🏼😍

The concept of bringing a new menu each month filled with a different style of takeaway food means you don’t have to wait long to try something fresh and I can assure you it’s worth the effort!

On this visit we went for;

Chicken Balls
Confit Duck Bao Buns
“Prawn Toast” Hashbrowns

📍 @chef.jaimito at @thatbeerplacehq (Chester)

The good news is, we’ve got another corker to tell you about. The bad news is, by the time you’ve read this review, @chef.jaimito will have packed in this menu so you literally won’t be able to get it. HOWEVER, he did show us the new menu for next month’s instalment of the takeaway series so you’re still in for a treat (spoiler, it’s kebab). Anyway, it’s no secret we’re absolute groupies for @chef.jaimito and that won’t be coming to an end anytime soon. He just makes food you absolutely want to eat, this Chinese series was absolutely delicious. Big fan of the three meats and the prawn toast with that wasabi lubrication situation, divine. See you at the next one, probably 45 minutes before the menu ends.

Vibe: blink and you’ll miss it

Return? Yes every month apparently

Score: 8.8
