October is National Farm to School Month! 🍎Together, we’re supporting organizations making farm-fresh food a reality for school kids across the country. That’s all thanks to you, Newman’s Own fans!

From making pesto with school-grown basil, to munching on crunchy carrots and exploring how sweet potatoes grow, students are discovering where food comes from and the skills, teamwork, and curiosity it takes to grow it. This early education shapes lifelong habits and tastes to create healthy, engaged kids. Do your kids have farm to school programs in their schools?

Our team is still buzzing from the excitement of last week’s CA Farm to School Summit and National Meeting in Sacramento!

We celebrated the policy wins with our partners in the California School Garden Coalition and Farm to School movement during National Farm to School Month.

We are very proud of Jason Corona, Child Nutrition Director at Oxnard School District, who was recognized for his leadership on the School Meals for All campaign, and Stephanie Towner from Rio School District, who was a panelist on the discussion about hands on farm education, and our Executive Director, Anna Jackson, who co-facilitated a workshop about funding school gardens through policy.

Connecting with colleagues across the country who are leading the school food revolution is inspiring and grounding all at once. Spending the day at incredible @soil_born_farms is an experience we are so grateful for- and provided valuable team building time- we are a stronger team after these few days!

We had a wonderful dinner at the Food Literacy Center with the School Garden Support Organization-

We are excited to partner with @clebagelco this school year! Starting in January, Cleveland Bagel everything bagels will be added to our High School breakfast menu!
Students at John Hay tried samples and let us know what they thought of the new menu item, and it was a hit! 🥯
We’re here to support local and serve tasty food!

A huge thank you to the @chefannfoundation and @cambromfg for the salad bar grant that has now become our condiment bars for Taco Tuesday at Ocean View High School! The students’ faces light up when they see all the fresh toppings and the opportunity to customize their own tacos. Your support is helping make mealtime more engaging, fun, and delicious!

Our work to transform school food in California doesn’t end with this administration!

We became the first state to guarantee two free school meals a day to all public school students and built the nation’s largest Farm to School program of its kind. Now, more than half of California’s public school children eat nutritious, locally-sourced, organic meals daily.

The work doesn’t end here! This movement belongs to the farmers, educators, school nutrition professionals, and advocates who brought it to life and will continue building this monumental program.

I chose the title First Partner intentionally because I believe lasting change takes partnership! Our Farm to School movement has shown me just how far a shared vision can go.

Thanks to the vision and dedication so many partners, farmers, educators, and food service workers across California, we’ve built the largest Farm to School program in the nation, feeding more than half of our public school children.

What a privilege it has been to work alongside you, champion your efforts, and celebrate all you’ve accomplished!

California feeds the nation and the world. Our kids deserve that same fresh, locally grown food on their school lunch trays!

At our Farm to School Summit, we reflected on what happens when we connect California farmers directly to schools. Healthier meals for our kids, stable markets for local farmers, and more than double the economic return to the community on every dollar invested. That’s the power of Farm to School!

For this week’s ✨FFVP Fun Friday✨, we’re going to highlight some progress! At the beginning of last year and the beginning of this year, we asked each school how they would rate student participation! With our 4 goals of FFVP, students are more excited for snack time! 🎉
This week we’re also learning about honeydew and tomatoes!

Today, we brought together farmers, educators, chefs, school nutrition leaders, and advocates at Soil Born Farms for our biennial California Farm to School Summit to celebrate the historic progress we’ve made transforming school food across our state!

Together, we’ve built the largest Farm to School program of its kind in the nation, now reaching more than half of California’s public school children with fresh, locally grown, regenerative organic food.

We’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished and grateful to everyone who has made this movement possible!

It’s National School Lunch Week! 🍎
A new report from @foe_us & @chefannfoundation “Building a Better Tray: How School Districts are Cooking with Healthier, Higher Quality Proteins,” features our work in Fallbrook this past year! It highlights 8 entrees from districts across the country, including the Tiger Teriyaki Tofu from Fallbrook Union Elementary School District. We collaborated with the wonderful school nutrition team to introduce and promote this dish through our Celebration Tasting Stations!
Nearly 30 million children eat school lunch every day, and there’s still work to do to make these meals healthier, more inclusive, and better for the planet. Today we’re celebrating the great work of school nutrition teams here in San Diego County and across the country, along with our partner organizations in the @plantpoweredschoolmeals coalition who advocate for change.
