The year 2003 was good in DIY with releases that included Inepsy's debut album, a Born Dead Icons LP, the Direct Control demo, the first Lebenden Toten 7", Totalitär appearing at Pointless Fest, DSB coming over, and tons more.

Here in the Boston area, it felt like change was in the air as it felt like street punk was kind of over here and "fastcore" was taking a back seat to a more refined early '80s influence. The various factions kinda came together to form a singular scene, and things were really good with DIY shows here seemingly every weekend and every bigger band coming through. Everyone was into Discharge and dressed in all black. In fact, it was all black everything. And it was great. Everyone was listening to Broken Bones, Motorhead, Cimex, GBH, Antisect, and of course Disclose.

There were things happening across the northeast: New York had new groups (No Fucker, Wreckage, Sangre de los Puercos), Philly had Dissystema, Connecticut had AOS, Providence with Straight To Hell and Contempt For Humanity, and Boston had various bands like Sleeper Cell, The Epidemic and State Control. And of course Montreal was in the mix too with all their bands like After the Bombs and Inepsy and, of course, partying. It was a good time.

2003 was also the year that Crust War put out three amazing 7"s by Final, Effigy, and Zoe. I think it's incredible how fresh these three records still sound nearly 20(!!!!) years later. Just booming, loud, and thunderous in their own ways. Zoe and Effigy took the blueprint of Axegrinder and ran with it to make this amazingly heavy mid tempo crust sound that was like being jackhammered to death. And Final took the foundation of Broken Bones and teased it out with a wild, out of control sound that should have taken off, but for some reason never really did. It was an unbelievable run of releases for Crust War, and i'm not sure if a label has equaled it since. Huge credit to Jacky for being able to pull it off and having the ear to recognize the quality of new bands.

So this post is an ode to 2003: the good people and friends from back who are still around and all of the great times.
