Thanksgiving this year looks unlike any year before, and practicing gratitude feels more like a heavy forced decision than second nature. Ever since we had a home big enough to gather round a table, Thanksgiving has been our thing. Our dining room has hosted family, friends, and a rotating cast of random characters who arrived on our door step with nowhere else to go. There was the year Buddha almost set herself on fire. And the year it was so warm out we briefly considered moving the table outside. And the year we got the turkey so perfectly right we will never be able to replicate it. We don’t get to have memories like that this year, but as I somberly grieve over another thing lost to the tide of 2020, I know this year will perhaps be one of the most memorable of all. No one wants to celebrate a family holiday in the hospital, but as I’m writing this post we are still alive, we still are breathing, and we are still filled with so much hope for what comes next. Anyone can be grateful when the sun is shining, but the gratitude that doesn’t come easy? The kind you have to hunt down in the corner, kick out with the broom and fight for, that’s a gift from God. A reminder that wisdom is often the byproduct bloody knuckles, chapped lips, and blistered feet. Happy Thanksgiving to you all, have an extra slice of pie for me this year, will you?

Man, this year more than ever we have sowed and sowed and sowed. We have done our best to make things work and continue life and find ways around the obstacles in our path, and now it's time for harvest. My Thanksgiving week looks a lot different than in years past–no crazy runs to the farmer's market, no massive spreadsheet of recipes, no fun afternoons on the deck stripping flowers for the tablescape of my dreams. But that's okay, this is a new kind of harvest, a more passive one. One that reminds me, the hard work is both over and just beginning all at once, so for now, we rest. // Recent work for @savannahbeeco
