Mr NODIG, CHARLES DOWDING was @wakelyns on Sunday. 28 people joined us for a morning of delicious biscuits and tea from the beautiful @wakelynsbakery David of @wakelyns gave a quick overview of the history of Wakelyns and we had a few hours of Charles talking us through slides and answering questions before a flavour explosion of lunch, which favoured small scale local farms for produce.
In the afternoon we went out to make a #nodig bed on our plot (see next post). I think it's safe to say that all of us had a wonderful time.

LAST COMMUNITY APPLE HARVEST OF THE YEAR @wakelyns, this Friday 28th October from 10am until 1pm…ish!

We’d love it if you are able to join us and help to harvest the last apples in Water Field at beautiful Wakelyns agroforestry this Friday.

The main ones we will be picking are Leathercoat Russet and Ashmeads Kernel, two of our favourites. Both with russeted skins, though apart from that, quite different from each other. The former has a much thicker, indeed, leathery skin, its flavour in a way reflecting it, robust, strong and sharp. The latter’s skin is delicate red and green in between the russet stripes, its flavour elegant and sweet. There’s Gooseberry too, huge green moons of tangyness, and Five Crowns, with their five point star-marked bottoms! Some of these are storers, keeping until at least February next year. So after harvesting and if you can stay, we’ll be wrapping each one in paper for storage, stopping the spread of mould.

We’ll have a pause at 11 for @wakelyns elevenses, tea, coffee, apple juice and CAKE, then continue until about midday - 1pm and come back to the bakery to weigh and record the harvest. And then lunch! Please bring a packed lunch and we will provide bread, butter and more apple juice to toast the harvest!

Wakelyns, indeed our whole wonderful living world that we are part of, is so very beautiful all year round, and autumn is no exception. It’s very hard to capture its beauty in any photos, so if you can come and experience it all in real life, please do.

Our harvesting days so far this year have been real delights of meeting new people and celebration. We hope that the last one will be just the same, maybe even more special.

Our super friend and plant breeder Nick Fradgley, has been working on his purple wheat for a while now. We’ve used it in our bread and it’s lovely. Today we used it in pastry and WOW! Texture delicate, short and as crumbly as the pastry of dreams, and the flavour… ‘gingerbread’ we all exclaimed as we tried an off cut we baked. So yummy, mmm! Yummy too with a @foodandforest hazelnut and frangipane and @wakelyns Conference and Louise Bonne pears. THANK YOU NICK! 🌾💜🌳🌾💜

We see a hopeful bright dazzling future on the horizon, where more plant breeders work like Nick, for flavour and nutrition, for Earth and human health and joy; where we work with them, have conversations with them - as do farmers, cooks, chefs and other members of the hospitality and food retail industries - to create a more delicious, nourishing and beautiful joyful world. We will get there, we will. ♥️♥️♥️

Happiness making this today - Maisie making the pastry, Robbie preparing the pears Serena, Marion and Maisie picked last Friday, me cooking them and frangipane-ing, Lydia washing up as we went, and making sure we all finished on time with a tidy kitchen. Lovely Suffolk people! When you can, go and eat this wonderful human’s @chefrobbie13 wonderful food at peaceful serene @vida.haus, most Fridays and Saturdays, just keep an eye out in their Instagram pages.

Robbie is such an inventive, feeling, in the moment cook, creating with what is around us all. We had bright pumpkin soup with sea buckthorn and breadcrumbs with our bread - thank you Robbie! - hazelnuts and pumpkin seeds; @hodmedods yellow split pea purée and @fellows_farm cucumbers and dill seeds, - or was it, fennel, Robbie?! - beetroot and its pickled leaves… all mopped up with our wholemeal bread, we didn’t want to leave a bit!

@vida.haus is also now selling fresh organic vegetables from many local growers every week, and we drop off our bread there every Thursday morning. Plus they have yummy cakes, drinks, yoga and much more. It’s a really happy space! Go! :) ♥️

APPLE, FIRST OF THE PEARS AND LAST OF THE PLUMS HARVEST TOMORROW!

Eat and taste and meet new friends and spend the morning/day outside and help us harvest. ♥️

A little bit last minute, but maybe that’s the best way to do things sometimes!

We’re going to be harvesting the last plums, the damsons, and some more apples and the first of the pears tomorrow from about 10am until lunchtime and we’d LOVE YOUR HELP! If you’d like to join us, please do come along. It’s a lovely time of year to see beautiful @wakelyns, so after harvesting you’re welcome to stay and have a walk of the farm.

We’ll meet at the bakery at 10am and harvest for a few hours, with some apple juice and cake to keep us going. Pick some for us to use here in the bakery, and take some home for yourselves too. Bring a packed lunch if you’d like to stay a little longer :)
