While I usually go to places only on recommendations from locals, I came across Oma Leen’s while scrolling. A comment from @chefshannonodom got me curious about their concept and I am so glad I went down the rabbit hole! Located in Hico Texas, Oma Leen’s serves up not only home cooking but Texas hospitality that makes you want to stay a while. Their brunch was phenomenal! The steak and eggs were perfection and the waffles .. oh and don’t let me forget the best biscuits I’ve EVER had. Lots of flavor coming out of Hico, Texas thanks to the duo of @austin__odom and @chefshannonodom. I was lucky enough to have to double back through the area recently and was able to make a quick stop at @barbacellis. While I wanted to eat the whole menu and sample some sandwiches, I showed restraint and went with a pizza and wings. The pizza is in the Neo style featuring a sourdough crust with beautiful blistering along the edges after a short stint in the wood fired oven. Sausage, hot honey, tomatoes and red onions were a pleasant balance to a tasty pie. The garlic parm wings are always hard for me to resist, and I’m glad I didn’t. Crispy and loaded with flavor these were some of the best wings in recent memory. They weren’t pretending to have flavor and then lightly dusted… they were overwhelmed with flavor and I was overwhelmed with joy. It’s amazing to me the quality of food you can get in a town like Hico, but after now having both locations, it’s a must visit to me. Honestly… @fbg_castiron has finessed all the things about a cast iron. They are, quite frankly, the luxury STANDARD when it comes to cast iron. After walking through the factory with the owners(Heather and Jay) we determined that they also understand taking something simple, and making it 100x better than it ever could be. Thank you Heather and Jay, for being so accommodating and welcoming us with such open arms. You are pursuing, the American dream. Get it.

@omaleens is one that I’ve wanted to visit for awhile. I guess if you had to say a hidden gem, this is close to it. Located in Hico, Texas about an hour and a half southwest of Fort Worth conveniently on the route to and from Fredericksburg. 

On our recent trip back from Texas wine country we mad the stop for brunch. With two kids in tow, I wasn’t able to get all the photos I would’ve liked but I was able to enjoy some incredible food far from the big city.

The OmaLeen name comes from Chef Austin’s great grandmother and Chef Shannon’s grandmother, Oma and Willene. The menu and the recipes passed down through generations celebrate southern bites with a modern chef driven approach for brunch. While dinner marries Italian bites with Texas flare. The brunch menu is short and sweet… a little savory, too. If you skip the biscuits, it’s worth spending a night in the nearest jail cell. Austin’s biscuits are made fresh daily and simply magical. The biscuit bites - the same magical dough, fried, drizzled with bourbon caramel, powdered sugar and honey. Clearly a favorite of my sons. 

From there we added the following - eggs Benedict, Burger and the chicken waffle that my son tore up before I could get a decent photo. The benedict, perfectly poached egg, and a great addition with crispy bacon. The chicken and waffles was truly the sweet and savory while added a subtle heat in the southern style chicken breast. My wife crushed the burger without asking if I wanted a bite but I made sure to crush some of the beef tallow fries generously topped with fresh parmesan. 

I must find a way to get back for dinner.
