I did some work for the #HeartlandFilmFestival & was rewarded w/ a virtual pass. Picked a New Zealand film called Caterpillar about 3 generations of women living in one house. Huia (Lisa Harrow) feels the oncoming dementia, but hides it from her daughter Maxine #MartaDussledorp & granddaughter Cassie #AnaisShand. Maxine is a filmmaker, who relies heavily on Huia to raise her daughter Cassie, not understanding that Cass is extremely resentful of all her time away.

What this family lacks is communication. Huia hides her diagnosis, preferring to buy a ticket to Hawaii to disappear than talk to her daughter. Not that it matters because Maxine has finally secured financing for a pet project, which means SHE has to travel, something she hides from Cassie, who’s tried out for the school production of Hamlet, a performance mom will miss in its entirety.

Unsupervised, cassie finds herself used by a male classmate, not against her will, but in a way that eventually makes her feel less than. Maxine needs to convince a celebrity play a role in her film about menopause, which is difficult in general, but also easy because it’s legitimately a good script.

When eventually the secrets come out (as they always do), Cassie’s fear of losing the steady influence of Huia becomes too much. She can’t stand to see her trapped in a home, waiting to die.

The title refers to monarch butterflies, who Huia wants to see one last time, but might not. It’s also the metamorphosis that Cassie has to undergo, crossing a line to adulthood. To a general audience, Maxine’s story might come across selfish, but 1, it’s based on the director’s real mom & 2, it’s VERY difficult to get films produced, which most don’t understand. Plus, she’s going thru a separation from Cassie’s dad, who is completely out of the picture. So, work/life balance is out of whack & bills need paying.

This is the sort of indie film that makes festivals so special & necessary. You have a couple of days to see for yourself online. #screeningoftheday

Had (quite literally) a remarkable time on A Remarkable Place to Die earlier this year with the most gloriously kind and extra welcoming cast and crew. Episode 4 directed by the deliciously talented @victoriabboult is now on @tvnz.official ✨

Episode 4 of A Remarkable Place to Die is out today!

Directing and co-writing this episode - alongside @chrisplank_1 and the late, great John Banas - was a joy. The RPTD cast and crew are some of the kindest, warmest and most talented people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with - and going to mahi everyday in my hometown was so surreal. Endlessly thankful to @phillydelacey and Charlie for this opportunity.

Catch it on TVNZ1 at 8:30pm tonight. Hope you love it as much as I do!!!
