🎂3*🎂

So here’s my little life 🤓 full of joy and adventure after so many years of struggle. Glad that even in moments of complete (and I do mean complete) hopelessness, that I was able to listen for, and amplify, small moments of joy.

For the longest time I never saw a way forward for myself, after years of being thwarted by the Home Office and being taught first hand that no matter what I build for myself, it could always be heartlessly demolished. I think back to the successful career I had as a photographer and how I had to abandon that path after Tier 4 visas were abolished, and only being able to find work in retail to survive - at times having to serve the very clients I had been shooting for months before. I think back to the times I pushed people away from me because I knew there was no point in love if it meant I could be deported next month. Even that time UAL refused entry to my own graduation ceremony because I couldn’t afford to rent robes (I was legally *allowed* to work only 20h pw, with no access to public funds/benefits - a limitation that ofc favours wealthy overseas students). Those are just small tastes of a larger feast of misfortunes, but I’m no longer about focusing on bad anythings.

All this to say…that in such circumstances I was forced to find what truly brought me lasting joy, and find those people who would truly stand by me. I’m very grateful for all those communities I’ve found that have nourished me along the way, helping to piece me back together anew after falling spectacularly apart. Thank you #SacredHarp singers for literally finding my voice, the Ballroom Scene for finding my fire & soul, to my @bittenpeach family for giving me the courage to laugh again, and tell my stories.

All these lifetimes later I’m now in a place where I can finally see a future for myself, one where I can bring together all of myself and my experience, not having to compartmentalise or apologise for myself. One where I actually share all the joys I find, always leaving the room better than when I arrived ☺️🙏🏽🌱

(Also here are my nipple piercings for the last time because I’ve had to remove them for reasons I cannot say 🤐)

This is HOME SWEET HOME, a House Captain film.

An ode to those foundational lessons that growing up in London gave us. And a celebration of the joy, the chaos, the never-ending stories that came with them. Soundtracked by @therealkano's game-changing debut album. Welcome back to 2006. We wanted to tell a story that was relatable, that honored an indelible moment in our lives. Cause we all know an Olu or a Danny. A Lyla or a Jerell. And we definitely all know an Ade.

The release of Kano’s legendary debut album coincided with the debut of adolescence for many Londoners and listeners above the age of 25. Which means, it was right next to many firsts. First loves, first fights, first set of real moral challenges. The variety of sounds on the album exhibit Kano’s still-emergent maturity - he wasn’t that much older than his target audience at age 20 when the album dropped. So, ‘’Home Sweet Home’’, as an album, played out like a set of lessons from that older in the ends. The one who’d been in the mix and seen it all.

It was a hustle making this film, and we’re super proud of what we made. Big love to the amazing cast and crew for all the effort and non-stop good vibes. This is just the first step into the world of House Captain. Lots more coming. We hope you enjoy watching. Please share it, repost it, run it up!!

Big shout out to @kickersuk for supporting our vision and providing us with the product to build a world that felt authentic to the time.

And thanks to @sookspaces for screening Home Sweet Home, we’re running across their Shoreditch and 42 South Molton Street venues, more details to follow in stories.
