Lessons are never learned in the easy times.

Think about something that shaped you in your first 20 years of life. Did you learn it in a season of ease… or a season of difficulty?

@zinajacque asks this question in rooms full of people, and almost no one says ease. Our deepest lessons come from the hard seasons: the failures, the regrets, the moments that made us stop and reorder everything we thought we knew.

The hard times don’t just happen to you. They call you up to a new level.

🎧 This is from Episode 1 of THRIVE with Cheryle with Rev. Dr. Zina Jacque.

Tell me below: do you learn lessons and times of ease or times of difficulty?

What if your regret is actually a gift?

@zinajacque said something that shifted how I see every “I wish I had…” moment in my life:

Regret means your mind is working. If you can regret something, you can imagine it turning out differently. And if you can imagine a different outcome, you can learn how to create it next time.

Her advice? Let regret pull you off the path for a moment. Don’t wallow there. Use that moment to imagine the different outcome, build that new pathway, then step back on the path, ready for something new.

That’s how you stop letting regret run the show.

Some regrets don’t leave. They get quieter while slowly stealing your joy 🤍

I sat down with my sister in spirit, @zinajacque (pastor, writer, change agent and one of the wisest women I know), and she said something that stopped me in my tracks:

Remember the lesson. Forget the incident.

We talked about the regrets we carry, why we hold on to them so tightly, and what it really looks like to renegotiate your relationship with your past instead of pretending to “just let it go.” Plus the difference between grace and mercy. Don’t miss that part.

The goal was never to have no regrets. It’s to stop letting them run the show.

THRIVE with Cheryle is back, and I’m bringing my whole self this time. 🎙️

I created this space with Black women in mind. We started with health and wellness, but you know life is bigger than that. So we’re talking relationships, faith, purpose, family, business… the real stuff we usually only say over a glass of wine with our girls. 🍷

New episodes start TOMORROW -10/20. Turn on your notifications. I don’t want you to miss a thing. 🔔

A big shout-out to the woman most famously known for keeping and leading the Polar Bear tradition at Inkwell Beach is social justice activist and long-time member Caroline Hunter. She has served as the group's lead instructor and spiritual leader for nearly 40 years, guiding the daily summer gatherings.Origins of the Polar BearsFounding in 1946: The group was formed during the Jim Crow era by Black seasonal residents, workers, and visitors.Morning Swims: Black workers had limited free time before their service shifts began, so they met at dawn to exercise and enjoy fellowship. The O'Brien Sisters: Sisters Myrtle and Anne O'Brien, prominent Black innkeepers in Oak Bluffs, encouraged and popularized the morning swims. Myrtle is widely credited with naming the group the "Polar Bears".Safe Haven: The Inkwell was a vital gathering place for African Americans during segregation. The name "Inkwell" itself originated during Jim Crow, used by white settlers as a derogatory term for Black beachgoers. The Tradition TodayThe Routine: Every summer morning at 7:30 AM, locals and visitors of all ages, races, and backgrounds gather at Inkwell Beach.Circle of Fellowship: Participants link arms or form a circle in the ocean to meditate, pray, exercise, and share communal breakfasts.Legacy of Rest: The tradition has evolved into a celebrated symbol of healing, resilience, and community, allowing Black swimmers to reclaim joy and space on the island.Further ExplorationFor deeper content and media on the Inkwell Polar Bears, check out these resources:Watch the Today Show Video covering the rich legacy of the early-morning swim.Listen to an episode on New England for a video look inside the Polar Bear Group.Read a detailed feature from Essence focusing on Black women reclaiming rest at Inkwell Beach. @inkwell.beach.club @visitoakbluffs @oakbluffslibrary
