“Yet, Land of the Free speaks to what fragments of New Orleans culture persist. There’s the distinct cadence of the people’s steps in the footage, syncopated to the 5-4-1 jazz cadence in the score. It would seem as though true continuity in the South can only be perceived against the grain of linear time. In regards to aesthetic decay, the film creates the reclamation of a failed imposed reality. Where there is infrastructural neglect or imposition, the social fabric is the foundational form of resistance. Further, in New Orleans, this social fabric would also exist even without a force to oppose. And that is a different type of timing, it’s infinite.“

“Thematically, the “Folie à deux Variations” are an outgrowth of explorations of relationships. The figures are intended to be in conversation with each other, while presented individually. Materially, the pieces are a continuation of a line of fabric collages I have been experimenting with for a while. Important to the works are the roles that light, transparency, and layering play in reflecting the complexity of individuality. The Monstera leaves are my nod to the themes of resilience, growth, fertility, and an homage to my grandmother, Dorothy.”
