at the sixty-ninth station
By RG Gregory

after hiroshige – stations of oi)

here at the sixty-ninth station
of the gregokaido road
i have a sense of completion
that is not completed yet

the long journey to this moment
has many disparate paths
fragments of people within me
have stuttered their broken mantras

what a bowl of uneasy pieces
litters the well of my bed - my name
doesn’t know how to welcome
tomorrow with its single demands

this christmas will say goodbye
to the last traces of middle age
the sere’s banners will be ready
to set off on its late procession

i have not gathered myselves together
with anything like that composure
wisdom and age should concoct
i have lost control of my strivings

christmas a game of new birth
the light giving hope to the dark
i wish i had the will to recover
the young coals that kept me bright

Erasing Old Footprints
By Brian Strand

Snow showers arrived from the darkened sky
Sometimes like rain, sometimes white flakes
Swirling freezing winds, whirling fallen leaves

From street to street and town to town they went
Shining grassy fields, crowning barren trees
Painting a winter scene, peaceful and serene

Then a new day came, with its own emissaries
Changing my landscape, erasing old footprints

Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day is “emissary”

Weekend Movie 🍿🎥
Moby Dick (1930)
The film tells of a sea captain’s maniacal quest for revenge on the great white whale that bit off his leg.
After disembarking in New Bedford, Ahab Ceely meets and falls in love with Faith Mapple, the daughter of the local minister. Although courted by Ahab’s brother Derek, she falls in love with the daring Ahab. She is heartbroken when he leaves on another voyage, but says she will wait three years for him to return. During this next voyage, Ahab loses his right leg to Moby Dick, a white whale. When Ahab returns to New Bedford, he mistakenly believes that the woman he loves no longer wants to see him because of his disfigurement, an opinion encouraged by Ahab’s brother, who wants Faith for himself. Ahab vows revenge against the whale, to kill it or be killed in the process, and returns to sea. Eventually, Ahab raises enough capital to buy his own ship, but no one wants to sail with him because of his passion for destroying Moby Dick.
On a resupply visit to New Bedford, most of the crew deserts the ship. Ahab directs his first mate to shanghai the necessary men and unknowingly takes his brother on board. During a storm, the crew mutinies and Ahab’s brother tries to kill him; he fails, and Queequeg breaks his back. Ahab orders that Derek be taken to Ahab’s cabin.
Moby Dick is sighted, and Ahab leads the boats out to get him. Driven by bloodlust, he stands on Moby Dick’s back and stabs him repeatedly with a harpoon as the dying whale’s spouting blood covers him. The crew renders the whale for oil, and they return to New Bedford, where Ahab and Faith are reunited.
The movie strays significantly from Melville’s original book. It introduces a romance between Ahab (Barrymore) and Faith Mapple (Bennett), alongside conflict with Ahab’s jealous brother Derek (Hughes).
The film features an early, experimental use of widescreen that expands during whale-chase sequences.

SONNET CXCII
Amor con la man destra il lato manco.
UNDER THE FIGURE OF A LAUREL, HE RELATES THE GROWTH OF HIS LOVE.
By Francesco Petrarch

My poor heart op’ning with his puissant hand,Love planted there, as in its home, to dwellA Laurel, green and bright, whose hues might wellIn rivalry with proudest emeralds stand:Plough’d by my pen and by my heart-sighs fann’d,Cool’d by the soft rain from mine eyes that fell,It grew in grace, upbreathing a sweet smell,Unparallel’d in any age or land.Fair fame, bright honour, virtue firm, rare grace,The chastest beauty in celestial frame,—These be the roots whence birth so noble came.Such ever in my mind her form I trace,A happy burden and a holy thing,To which on rev’rent knee with loving prayer I cling.

5asideCHESS is a multitool. But like any tool, it needs people to put it to work. ♟️

For men in prison, for young people, for workplaces it can build confidence, communication and essential life skills.

Across generations, it can bring people together.

And across cultures, it speaks a universal language, breaking down barriers without the need for words.

One simple game. So many possibilities.

Because it’s not about who you beat, it’s about who you meet. 💛
