POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Throwback Thursday. As it’s Sweet Charity’s 60th birthday, I’m dragging this clip out again. I’ve had the pleasure of doing Sweet Charity twice. Once with the wonderful @thebonnielangford and we were lucky enough to learn the original Choreography, by Bob Fosse’s assistant, the amazing @chetwalker9 The second time was with the fabulous @glamzin doing my own choreography. This is me tipping my hat to Bob Fosse. I was blessed to have the sensational @leggylina Ebony Molina. This is Ebony and our wonderful cast doing The Rich Man’s Frug. ❤️🎭❤️😘

Many years ago dancing along @officialdanamoore & @thejustmark "Merci Merci" with choreography by the late @chetwalker9
So many memories of those rehearsals and the many stories told, I am grateful for the experiences I've had so far, and excited for the ones coming up next.

Singing can muster joy, deep satisfaction and it can also make a singer feel vulnerable. You can’t see the mechanism at work from the inside and as a teacher we’re always referencing something we literally can’t put our finger on. The result lies in how it feels and sounds. So, the process of teaching singing requires some faith and trust.

I met Kim Hale in 2010 when I taught her in Chet Walker’s Musical Theater Dance program at The School at Jacob’s Pillow. She was teaching dance on a tenure track at Syracuse University and seeking further study. One of 24 she was a good deal older than the other 23 students. Fearless. Kim has since moved to NYC to pursue a career here. My job is to help my students sing the best they can in a sustainable way so that they can have the best shot at getting work. So, we dug in.

A dancer through and through, we started at the beginning building her voice about a year plus ago. Kim just returned from her first AEA contract in a musical in a long time and just booked her next AEA musical- and a national commercial to boot! BTW, she is not a novice and her journey is well documented. #mskimhale #firesidetheater #rydervoiceworks #jacobspillow #voiceteacher

BATE PAPO ~ CHAT WITH CHET
(First half of PART lll)

He was brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant!

This is Part III of my interview with my dear friend Chet Walker, who graciously shared anecdotes about his extraordinary career, insights into the business of showbiz, and truly historical moments that have shaped the landscape of Broadway and beyond.

In this chat, he speaks intimately about his relationship with—and his unique POV on—Bob Fosse, both the director and the man. He discusses Stephen Schwartz, his longtime friend, and the creation of PIPPIN in both 1972 and 2013. He also reflects on his experience working with the remarkable Tony Award–winning director Diane Paulus, who won for directing the Broadway revival of PIPPIN—the production for which Chet himself earned a Tony nomination for choreography “in the style of Fosse.”

This interview was low-key and truly just that: a chat, a kiki between two friends. I’m deeply grateful that he granted me and my students this time, and that he shared so honestly about his journey.

Chet is no longer with us, and he will be missed by so many. I miss him dearly. I’ve put together these three interviews to honor his memory and keep his voice alive.

Most of all, I hope that Charlie, his daughter, can one day watch these with love in her heart and know how deeply her father adored her. Charlie—he told me you were the most important force in his life.

✨ I dedicate these interviews to you, Charlie. ✨

Chet stopped by my dream last night for a brief, beautiful moment! I was at Steps on Broadway and saw Chet Walker sitting on the benches in the long hallway. I did a double take & thought to myself, “How did I miss that Chet was teaching today?! A Chet class is EXACTLY what I need. This is amazing!” I walked over to give him a huge hug & he smirked at me, cleared his throat in a very dramatic fashion and stuck his hand out for me to shake instead of hugging him. It made me laugh that he was dogging me for not being in his class for a while (I couldn’t figure out why I hadn’t been in his class for a few years), so I smirked back, raised my eyebrow and gave the most dramatic, low curtsy & said, “What a PLEASURE it is to be back in your presence, good sir!” We laughed, we hugged, and he tossed his hair back/up/sideways with a huff! I waved & said, “I’ll see you in there!”

Fast forward through dream chaos confusion of not being able to find Chet’s classroom & ending up in the wrong studio…I finally found my way to the door of Chet’s class & reality hit me like a ton of bricks. I began lucid dreaming and thought, “WAIT!!! Oh my gosh….CHET! Oh…I haven’t been in Chet’s classroom in a few years because he hasn’t been here.” I stood outside his classroom with longing & awe, watching him lead his warmup with his rain music guiding him. I was woken up shortly after and haven’t stopped thinking about it all day. It was so good to see him leading his warmup & dancing!

Hi Chet! Thank you for stopping by. I was a lost little duckling in NYC in 2017 after my first tour finished & your classroom changed my life. It also brought amazing friends into my life. As I navigate a new city after another finished tour, thank you for your beautifully timed visit!

This picture is from a 2 week new work workshop I did with Chet & Jack in 2021. Seeing Chet laugh a lot during this workshop is something I’ll never forget. (Making him laugh was absolutely a MISSION ACCOMPLISHED feeling! 😂) I hope you’re kick ball changing to your heart’s desire. You are so dearly missed here ♥️
