Moi again everyone, it’s @issessi here! 👋🏻🇫🇮

I’m taking over from the brilliant @domisalu 💕

Chapter 1 - Introduction

I’m Essi, a Finnish cinematographer based in London. I have over a decade of experience in the film and TV industry.

I don’t come from a filmmaking family and it took years to build the courage to try to enter the industry. At 20, I left my small hometown and moved to Helsinki to pursue film and TV. I began as a set designer’s trainee, convinced women couldn’t become cinematographers. All the credits I saw listed men and the idea of leading a technical crew with authority and confidence felt impossible for someone like me.

But I kept the dream alive. Eventually, I got into an undergraduate program at @elotv_metropolia to study cinematography and editing. I wanted to deepen my technical knowledge, especially with cameras and lenses, so I went to trainee at a camera rental house.

While being a trainee at @angelfilms.fi I made connections with camera assistants and cinematographers, and soon landed my first feature film job as a camera trainee. That led to four years as a camera assistant: 2nd ACing for features and TV, focus pulling on shorts, music videos and commercials. I was often the only woman in a technical role on set.

During that time, I also shot my own smaller projects, experimenting with lighting and visual language, applying everything I had observed on professional sets.

In 2019, I left camera assisting behind and fully committed to cinematography. It was a slow start, and Covid didn’t help, but even as I turned down the biggest focus pulling jobs of my career, I knew I had made the right choice.

After the pandemic in 2021 I felt stuck with my career and applied to the NFTS as a Hail Mary. I ended up getting in, and in 2024 I graduated with an MA in Cinematography. @nftsfilmtv @nftscinematography

Now with over 13 years of experience and becoming a part of the badass @illuminatrix_rising_dops collective, I’m more driven than ever to work as a cinematographer.

Over the course of the next week, I will be taking you through some of my past, present and future projects.

See you tomorrow! x
