Nestled behind six hundred of years old limestone at the edge of the modern town of Nardò, Puglia is @monasterodellincoronata . An Augustinian monastery immaculately restored, which hosted my retreats home for the past 10 days. Southern Italy is a place of thresholds, portals where magic meets regeneration, where thousands of years of tradition merge and meld with modern life.

Churches built atop temples, built atop new forms of meaning making and reverence for the land. For the past ten days I was blessed with a group of the most caring, open and adventurous bunch of students a teacher could ask for. We cried, we ate, we made color from fig, loquat, rosemary, olive, bay, and pomegranate. We mixed colors from madder and indigo, oak gall and chestnut. We visited Ostuni, Lecce & Grottaglie and our dear friends Scott & Emilia at @terra___elaya Elaya. We planted trees, touched the soil and sipped rosemary tea remembering plants from our childhoods. We had cooking classes with the inimitable Maria Grazia of @masseriapotenti and were introduced to the magic of the land and the incredible storytelling of the region by @chiatomtom who I now know is a life long sorella.

But back to my group. I believe in learning laterally. The hierarchy of education is crumbling. Like our Nonnas did, we learned through making, gossiping, storytelling around the soup and dye pot, looking and taking in what our hands were doing around the fire.

A Return to the Soil — Puglia, October 2026

A week immersed in the rhythms of nature at the @masseriapotenti a beautiful farm in the ethereal Salento of South Italy.

Among olive groves, ancient fig trees and the abundance of the autumn harvest, we gathered to reconnect with the earth, with ourselves and with one another through yoga with @alignwithrainbow , gardening and wellness.

Ours days were spent sharing, exploring, teaching and listening to the land with @chiatomtom . Learning from nature, tending the soil, gathering around the table and finding moments of stillness.

At the heart of our time together was the idea of reciprocity — that our relationship with nature is one of giving as much as receiving. To care for the land that nourishes us, to observe its rhythms and recognise that we, too, are part of the living world.

In the words Robin Wall Kimmerer “The land is the real teacher. All we need as students is mindfulness. Our take away is a deeper sense of belonging to the natural world, and a renewed understanding that to care for the earth is also to care for ourselves.

I came for the food (and my goodness, the FOOD) but I think I’ll remember everything that happened around it even more.

Learning the rhythms of the Italian pantry. Long tables. Beautiful produce. Stories shared over wine. Dancing in the monastery moonlight to Dean Martin. Strangers who very, very quickly stopped feeling like strangers. The luxury of having nowhere else to be.

This retreat was such a beautiful reminder that slowing down isn’t something you have to earn. And in some lovely way, it feels like this beautifully restored monastery passed a little restoration on to me too.

Very well fed. Very grateful. Grazie mille a tutti 🇮🇹 x

Per capire cosa rende speciale la @masseriapotenti basta varcare il suo portone e arrivare nell'ampia corte, dopo aver attraversato ulivi e ulivi. La luce che si infrange man mano diversa sulla calce bianca, la cura e la grazia ovunque, la pace, e poi l'accoglienza, con Maria Grazia e Chiara che, di tavolo in tavolo, intessono chiacchere e regalano sorrisi, con l'aria che profuma di bouganville e delizie pugliesi pronte per la tavola. Il suo essere speciale è semplicemente questo: si entra clienti, e si esce amici.
