What if the act of creating art is already an act of social change? ✊🏾🎨 In Part 3 of our conversation with Chicava Tate, we explore how creativity can challenge exclusion, reclaim space, and make room for voices that are too often marginalized. For Chicava, art doesn't have to take one particular form to make a difference. It can be a painting, a space where artists create without the pressure of financial overhead, or even a revolutionary puppet show! Speaking about Governors Island, Chicava highlights the importance of giving artists room to create without the pressure of constant transactions. This freedom allows artists to reconnect with themselves, express their truths, and live with a sense of autonomy. This is at the heart of LiberArte’s mission: recognizing creativity as a catalyst for social transformation and advancing racial, social, and climate justice through the arts. Because sometimes, social change begins with something as simple and as powerful as making space for people to tell their stories. #liberarte #artsforsocialchange #creativeexpression #socialjustice

🦋It’s ALL connected and we need to build global unity to model a world that shifts away from mass-scale mining (ecological extermination or ecocide) for mass-scale weapons production used for mass murder (genocide). It’s simply not sustainable for humanity’s highest potential to cooperate on Earth. Let’s build global consciousness and lay mass extraction, exploitation & violence to rest. For those in yhe U.S.: Call your members of Congress to denounce the misappropriation of U.S. tax payer dollars for rare earth mineral mining in Brasil and demand accountability for U.S. interference in Brasil’s elections! #Brasil #Brazil #elections #fyp #viral

Continuing our conversation with Chicava Tate, we’re exploring the story behind Journey of a Black Girl and the vision for what’s to come. ✨ Curated by Atlanta-based Courtney Brooks, who has been running the program for approximately three to four years, the exhibition celebrates the journey of Black women through hair, cultural expression, and the ways we work together and connect across generations. Now planned to open the season next year, the six-week exhibition will run in June and July, with Courtney curating each room of the house through art and installations. But the experience goes beyond the exhibition. Visitors can look forward to a weekend of programming with Willie Mae’s Rock Camp for girls, crafting with Black Girls Sew, dance, movement, and more all coming together to create a celebratory gathering space where people can connect, create, and explore the arts of nature. Through the Liberation Through the Arts Grant (LTAG), we’re sharing the creative visions of grantees bringing culture, community, and meaningful artistic experiences to life. 🖤 Stay tuned for more stories from our grantees! #liberationthroughthearts #journeyofablackgirl #artsandculture #communityarts

Meet @chicava , a polyhyphenate performer, actor, producer, and one of LiberArte’s Liberation Through the Arts grantees from the past cycle. ✨ Burlesque is her primary discipline, but Chicava also explores acting and stand-up comedy. For 15 years, she ran Brown Girls Burlesque, a project featuring Black women and other women of color that created a space for them in burlesque where one didn't previously exist. Today, Chicava serves as Programs Director of Chicava Sanctuary, whose primary project, @duyemoves , operates on Governors Island as a micro-institution for the arts, serving artists and the community. Through DuYe Moves, they offer free programming throughout the summer, with a foundation in dance and movement, including African Diaspora dance and cultural dance. 🎥 This is Part 1 of our In Their Element conversation with Chicava Tate. Stay tuned for more! #intheirelement #whereartcomesalive #artsandculture #communityart

When we mean every(BODY), we mean it. 👑 We polled our audience last weekend, and the verdict is in! So many people have been inspired, influenced, and impacted by the beauty of Black burlesque. This exhibit exists to raise awareness and hold reverence for the artistry and contributions of Black burlesque performers across the globe. Specifically, Neo-Burlesque carries the fingerprints of Black artistry — in style, movement, and stage presence. Because our contributions have so often been erased, we center the experiences and talents of the living performers who left their mark on it. Our historical advisor, @chicava, has spent years researching the influence Black burlesque has had on commercial entertainment across generations. This exhibit is about naming the performers behind that influence who never got enough shine. Filmed at the Ecdysiast Arts Museum, home to the exhibit’s permanent collection. Follow @everybodywantstobeashowgirl and @ecdysiastartsmuseum to learn more about our mission and our 2027 pop-up dates. Tag a showgirl in the comments who we need to preserve in the archive. To support the exhibit, you can contribute to our museum sponsor — link in bio. (🎥 @lindsayayayyy) #EWTBASExhibit #BlackBurlesque #ecdysiastartsmuseum #EverybodyWantsToBeAShowgirl

It’s not every day I walk into a new space and it feels like home… When the yoga studio that raised me closed years ago, it felt like the end of an era. @sacredbrooklyn was the most beautifully diverse, welcoming, body and sex-positive yoga community I have ever witnessed. I would not be the person or teacher I am now without the years I spent in that space. When I heard former Sacred teacher and student Aqila @efa_enneagramfloweralchemy would be hosting a reunion at her studio in Bedstuy this weekend, I knew I had be there! The moment I landed on my mat, I felt it…home. As I rolled my hips, stripped off gloves and fluttered feathers in Sacred Burlesque with @chicava, I remembered the joy of tapping into sensual, creative and playful energy. Then rainy Sunday morning chanting and moving in Bhakti Flow with @ollie.henry1, whose teaching is grounded in accessible and trauma informed practice, was a balm to my nervous system. Since relocating with my family from BK to rural upstate NY, a lot of my personal practice is at home or online. But this weekend reminded me how much of the practice beyond asana benefits from live, human interaction. Yamas and niyamas play out in our relationships with one another. When we practice pranayama or meditate together in space held and guided by a teacher, it’s powerful. The deep connection, eye to eye and soul to soul that happens in a community of practice is wild…no small talk, no bs, just true hearts. I’ve been missing this. I’m forever grateful to @daragay, @stephaniebattleyoga, @brooklynicoler and so many others for what Sacred was, and to Aqila, @dmanifest and @iamafstac for carrying the tradition forward. If you’re in Bedstuy and seeking a humble community-minded space, deeply rooted in ancestral knowledge and lineage, consider dropping in to practice at @soulworkstudio…and I will meet you there for the next Sacred reunion! 🙏🏻❤️🖤🔥
