Thank you @refugeetales and @gatwickdetaineeswelfaregroup (GDWG) for an utterly beautiful two days walking in West Sussex, with and in support of people who have experienced immigration detention. The walk is an annual five day pilgrimage modelled on the Canterbury Tales, with stories, poetry and music each evening, resulting in a series of books from @commapress. This year readers including experts by experience, writers and performers shared love letters to Refugee Tales, now in its 11th year. The venues and accommodation are provided by local religious and other organisations. Yesterday we gathered in the cool and airy Catholic church in Bognor Regis, where I was delighted to hear @bidisha_on_insta speak. Bidisha is a long-time advocate of Refugee Tales and also supported my science fiction novels The Gaia Chronicles, which are about an uprising in a refugee camp in a post-collapse world. Tonight I was moved to be back in Graylingwell Chapel, where @astra_theatre, my multimedia adaptation of the novels, was performed in 2022 for @chichesterfringe. Sadly I was a day walker for only 2 days, as I can’t take too much time out just yet. But I will be back! It was wonderful to meet so many amazing folk committed to ending to the UK’s cruel practice of indefinitely detaining asylum seekers without charge - in one case for nine years. No other Western European country does this. But in our dangerous, hot times, Refugee Tales demonstrates that, with compassion and joy, we can imagine, work and walk toward a far better world. Very best to the walkers as they carry on to Portsmouth over the weekend! I will be writing more about Refugee Tales for @criticalmuslim - watch this space! 🥾🕊💙
