Today we’re celebrating not only Latin Heritage Month but Luis’ birthday! Happy 17th Birthday Luis! We hope you’ve had a fantastic day so far 🎂🎉 Luis is an AFH Videography Studio Teen who has worked on 7 films throughout his career at Artists for Humanity. He has a love for superheroes—- especially Spider-Man— and has a taste for storylines that are relatable and human but also very cool. As of right now, he has made 5 Spider-Man suits, and even though he’s donned the suits several times, he does not dream of living amongst the chaos and destruction in the Marvel Universe. Symbiote invasions, property destruction, and the loss of a car via Hulk Smash is not appealing to Luis. He’s more interested in Peter Parker and Spider-Man as a relatable character who is put into insane scenarios. “Spider-Man is really relatable to people,” he explains, “That’s why I like Spider-Man.” Luis is currently working on writing a Red Riding Hood film with a twist. His version of the classic fairy tale is inspired by latin and hispanic culture where the Big Bad Wolf is a Chupacabra——and that’s not even the twist! You’ll have to stay tuned and wait for the film to come out to find out how Luis has changed the story. Luis was born in Massachusetts, but his dad is from Puerto Rico, and he speaks fondly of his visits— explaining that he misses the food and his family and hopes to visit again sometime soon. We’re so excited to see how his version of Red Riding Hood incorporates his relationship to his Puerto Rican heritage and to see what he does even further beyond the film, as he’s also a traditional and digital illustrator— Luis is a triple threat! Everyone wish Luis a Happy Birthday in the comments below and enjoy this brief collection of clips from some of the films he’s written and directed! #happylatinheritagemonth #puertoricanpride #spiderman #filmmaking

Similar to Soccer, Graphic Design and illustration at AFH is a team sport! Thank you to Synergy for passing the ball to AFH and trusting our team to bring your vision of celebration, unity, and love of soccer to life. “In those illustrations, you see the country’s background, their neighborhoods, you see their cities, you see their skylines. So when they come here, they feel like they have been noticed, and they feel like: Hey, there’s a little respect for our country in Boston.” —Mikey Guadarrama, AFH Graphic Design Director and Brand Manager In this video, you get a sneak peek into the process from start to finish—seeing the amount of care and detail that our team put into creating all nine windows. Each window represents a country participating in the World Cup, with players from Haiti, France, England, Scotland, Morocco, Norway, Iraq, and Ghana all kicking the ball towards the final soccer player and the window representing Boston. Shoutout to AFH teen designers Mai, Stephon, Te’Zohn, Ashley, Larel, Jaliegha, Yasmine, Hodan, Angelo, Kia, and Shamania as well as mentors Mikey Guadarrama, Jonathan Tejeda, Tamara Yampolsky, and Cierra Larkin for creating this awesome piece celebrating FIFA’s World Cup and thank you to @synergybos and @lifeatbgo for making this happen! #fifaworldcup #bostonart #cityplazaart

How does color affect YOUR story? “One of the biggest things that color brings is emotion. Whatever you have around you, it’s gonna affect your mental health.” — Diana Cisneros, AFH Teen The ICA Teen Exhibitions Program dedicated so much time, energy, and care to interviewing AFH teen artists and organizing Coloring Book. We’re so excited for you all to see the product of our collaboration TOMORROW at ICA’s Seaport Studio (100 Pier 4 Blvd, 2nd Floor, Boston, MA 02210) Until then, please enjoy a small sneak peek into the interview process! 🤩 Coloring Book centers around how eight teen artists from Artists for Humanity (AFH) use color to express stories. Some of these artists choose colors that connect their artwork to current events, while others use it to call back to history. Still others use color to convey feelings or remind us of the simple pleasantries of life. Join us for the opening! When: Fri, Aug 7, 6-8pm Where: Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston Seaport Studio, 100 Pier 4 Blvd, 2nd Floor (entrance on Seaport Blvd), Boston, MA 02210 AFH harnesses the power of art, mentorship, and paid professional experiences to inspire teens to build their future. Transcending economic, racial, and social divisions, AFH teens transform communities through creative expression by collaborating on innovative art and design projects commissioned by clients and sharing their voice through public art. This exhibition was organized by the ICA’s Teen Exhibitions Program (TEP). This group amplifies teen art and artists by collaboratively creating and activating exhibitions in the ICA’s Teen Galleries. In this space, they imagine new ways to present their work and grow in their own creative practices by working together and with ICA staff. Teen arts education is central to the ICA, and TEP is just one of many programs offered. Questions or requests for accessibility assistance? Email teens@icaboston.org or text or call (339)236-3039 Please contact exhibitions@afhboston.org to inquire about purchasing artwork. #thingstodoinboston #bostonartexhibition #fridayplans

“Don’t give up on your dreams. People will tell you that it’s not possible. But you can do anything, as long as you keep trying,” Nikkia Brown, AFH Teen Designer emphasizes, “You’re gonna do it! It’s going to happen because it’s happening to me right now.” You miss all the shots you don’t take! Nikkia has been at AFH for 3 years, has lived in Massachusetts her whole life, and as a Senior at Tech Boston, is now in the process of deciding which culinary institute she wants to attend in the Fall — all of which are located outside of Massachusetts. Despite loving to travel, Nikkia says that this aspect of growing up and moving on has hit her the most, explaining that she feels like she’s been at AFH most of her life and that “this change is going to hit hard.” She cites mentors Mikey, Pineapple, and Jordan as her biggest design inspirations, and her father as her biggest culinary inspiration. “He’s the person who inspired me to get into cooking first.” Nikkia reflects, “I started cooking when I was 8, with pork chops and gravy, and then we kept moving up and up and up.” From art and design to crafting a delicious meal, Nikkia is passionate about her work and has hopes for combining her Graphic Design skills with the culinary arts in the near future. She’s already thinking ahead to how she might design recipe books, coloring books, business cards, and stickers! We’re so excited for Nikkia to grow, learn, and explore, but we’ll miss her! She always has a home at AFH, and we’re so lucky to have had her on our team. Swipe through to see some of the work she has made through AFH and leave her some love and support in the comments to take with her during her next adventure! #artistspotlight #culinaryarts #graphicdesigner #illustrator
