Surface Anomaly: New Explorations in Poster Design
Now Open Through January 12th!

📍 NOTHINGISREAL
Hyehwa-ro 9-gil 7, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea
낫씽이즈리얼 / 서울시 종로구 혜화로 9길 7, 3층

An anomaly disrupts the expected—it unsettles, provokes, and transforms perspectives. Surface Anomaly showcases experimental posters by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) students from the Fall 2024 session of Newly Formed, a course exploring materials, strategies, and tools in graphic design.

Responding to the theme of "Anomaly," these works embrace unpredictability, using generative and iterative methods to create bold typographic systems, daring compositions, and surprising juxtapositions of color and scale.

This exhibition at NOTHINGISREAL celebrates the power of the irregular to inspire beauty and innovation. Rare publications by past Newly Formed students, curated by Draw Down Books, further reveal the evolution of creative experimentation within the course.

✨ Surface Anomaly also features a special DRAW DOWN BOOKS Reading Room, presenting a curated selection of titles.

Featuring work by:
Kate Brown, Chi Hao Chang, Li June Choi, Kimberly Duck, Dani Guerra, Ritvi Gilara, Sejal Gupta, Zhenran He, Luisa Heindl, Yeriel Jeong, Dohee Kim, Minah Kim, Un Kira, Soyoung Ro, Elliott Romano, Vishakha Ruhela, Brooke Shary, Osmond Tshuma, Chanya Vitayakul, Selina Wu, and So Jung Yoon

Co-curated by:

Student work highlight ✨

Immersive Installation by Chi Hao @chihaochang

This immersive installation references 17th-century philosopher John Locke’s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding to develop a methodology for reimagining the traditional patterns of early 20th-century Japanese textiles.

The installation invites viewers to experience mono no aware, a Japanese idiom for the awareness of impermanence or transience of things.

In the context of the digital age, where information is abundant and time feels compressed, this work asks:

What are the meditative or peaceful moments of modern life?

A series of animations on layered digital screens and physical materials intertwine natural imagery with fragments of online experiences of pausing, encouraging viewers to reflect on their perception of time amidst this digital nature.
