Vol. XI brings us poetic works from Jaye, Josephine, and Jillian, followed by a double music bill featuring Russia (from LA) and Mealworm (from here). My sis Chloe is doing the Community Poem, which is all about how to throw the perfect party. Let’s be crazy! This is the one night of the month we get to Bloom each other off without shame!  Bloomers Poetry Club is a traveling literary cabaret funded and sustained entirely by me and you. This month we’re raising money for someone in my family who is at risk of homelessness. You can donate $5-20 at the door, OR bring drinks to share with everyone. If money is tight but you have a bottle of wine at home, just bring that instead! NOTAFLOF, obviously.

Happy publication day to Jordan Tannahill’s unforgettable, heart-and mind-warping novel THE LIVING REALM, a book that somehow, as Garth says, covers “the whole of life” in under 150 pages. Like Dennis Johnson’s TRAIN DREAMS or, most of all, Sebald’s THE RINGS OF SATURN, Jordan’s novel collapses time and loss and love and history into something magically tangible and simultaneously ethereal and universal.

But obviously because this is Jordan, his novel is an absolute blast to read: wistful and quietly funny and, naturally, containing (in the words of Kirkus) “one of the oddest—and kinkiest—sex scenes in recent gay fiction.” It is the perfect, lingering, end of summer story in every way; it is as accomplished and stunning a novel as I have ever published, something that will stay with you and your past, present, and future selves.

Thank God It’s Queer presents GO (1999) preceded by WAKING UP FROM A NAP ON A LONG DAY OF DOING NOTHING, the new short film by @thomjh (writer/director of MATINEE BABY and co-host of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW at the Clinton Street Theater).

Set on Christmas Eve, 1999, GO stars Academy Award-winner Sarah Polley as a checkout clerk who gets duped into buying ecstasy for a couple of gay narcs (Jay Mohr and Scott Wolff). From there, this twist-a-minute screenplay takes you on a ride that must be ridden to be believed. Featuring James Duval & Timothy Olyphant at their hottest, and jaw-dropping cameos by Jane Krakowski and Melissa McCarthy, GO is a turn-of-the-century flashback you didn’t know you needed.

Happy publication day to Missouri Williams’ sui generis second novel THE VIVSECTORS, a book as spikily original, ferociously smart, gleefully provocative and bleakly hilarious as you’ll ever read. It’s somewhere between Lars von Trier and Faulkner, set in a campus love story and also amongst a group of rogue, storytelling gardeners. You kind of just need to read it to get it; Missouri’s mind makes me very happy. It’s exactly the type of fiction I know will stand the test of time—and also freak you out. I adore you @missouriwilliams and am so grateful for our second book!! You make this job so fun.

From an award-winning screenplay, WAKING UP FROM A NAP ON A LONG DAY OF DOING NOTHING was partially filmed at the Clinton Street Theater and was made possible by a community crowdfunding campaign with over 75 individual donors and 30 local business sponsorships. The short’s centerpiece First Thursday scene was made in collaboration with 14 local painters, illustrators, photographers, sculptors, furniture makers, and puppet designers.

This special premiere event will feature a moderated post-show Q&A with select cast and crew. All attendees will also receive commemorative postcards designed by Shea Satterlee of @filmschoolpdx. Proceeds of ticket sales will go directly to the film’s festival submission and distribution fund.
