POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This past Wednesday night 6 decades/three generations of dance artists who created, shaped and participated in the historic dance program at Portland State University gathered for a “wake” and map-making party inside my exhibition at PLACE. Conceived as part of the programming of my Converge45 exhibition - The Evidence of Foot Fall, I organized this gathering because it is impossible to think about dance in this city without deeply recognizing the contributions and artistic diaspora of this program, which was shuttered in 2024. I was the last faculty member standing on the shoulders of the beloveds you see above and so many more that could not be with us in the room - Judy Patton, Cathy Evleshin, Minh Tran, Tami Gray, Sara Grindle, Bonnie Nedrow, Nancy Martino, Carolyn Stuart, Melissa St. Claire, Gregg Bielemeier, and on and on and on. Together, in community, we hived our knowledge and began to make a map - a record, by those who actually built the program from 1969-2024. What a run! What a huge loss for our city to have this program shuttered.

The map is not ready to published yet but you can see the early marks in these images.

Embodied archiving; what is remembered lives.

The "WHAT WE CARRY" Workshop is an AANHPI affinity space designed to explore cultural identity, generational history, and community connections through movement, writing, and shared dialogue. Inspired by the original work “What I Carry” by Chisao Hata, this gathering offers a supportive environment to reflect on ancestry, racial solidarity, and the impacts of historic racism on our lived experiences as part of residency with @ifccfriends . Workshop is happening August 15, 2026, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Historic Alberta House (5131 NE 23rd Ave). Register on our website (theatrediaspora.org) or link in our bio!

Chisao Hata is a performing artist, educator, and arts integration specialist. Known as a “community weaver,” she serves as a protector of imagination and personal discovery and a champion for individual expression.

Hata has had the honor of serving hundreds of Portland’s children, youth, and adults across many communities. She believes that we are all inextricably linked, and the power of gathering is a conduit to build and heal our understandings between our communities.

Join Chisao at the museum on Sunday, August 2 at 2 for the free "Community Conversation: What Does It Mean to Be American?"

Join us at the museum on Sunday, August 2 at 2 PM for the free Community Conversation: What Does It Mean to Be American?

The 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence provides an important opportunity to ask questions about our nation and ourselves, and to reflect on the future.

Presented in partnership with Oregon Humanities (@oregonhumanities) and artist-educator Chisao Hata (@chisaoart), this dialogue will explore how we define ourselves as an “American.”

Does knowing the Constitution make us American? Does living on land controlled by the United States make us American? Through conversation and nonverbal exploration, participants will share what “American” means to us individually and within the communities we belong to or came from.

This program is free to attend. Admission is free every first Sunday of the month.

Reserve your spot at the link in the bio.

The 11th Vanport Mosaic Festival begins Friday. Consider this less an announcement than a whisper.

We have been carrying a lot. So have many of you. The grief of watching the foundations of our democracy erode, of seeing communities targeted, histories threatened, and the hard-won work of generations put at risk.

And yet we keep coming back.

Because when we come together, something shifts. There is belonging, beauty, and the grounding that comes from learning where you stand in a longer story. And there is the specific joy of imagining, together, the future we are trying to build.

This year’s festival is smaller. Quieter. More intimate. And in that simplicity, we hope you will find something essential: the unadorned heart of what this gathering has always been.

We are not pretending everything is fine. We are doing something harder and more honest: showing up together, in joy and vulnerability, because gathering around stories of struggle, resistance, and community care is medicine. And we all need it right now.

Swipe to find what calls to you. ↓
