"Food is an Emotion!", a thought that resonated amongst many of us who attended the first such potluck event organised by The Local Food Club in Chennai!
It was a wholesome experience and loved connecting with people, who had a similar passion towards food as me! Can't wait to meet y'all next month!

Her name is Kamala. I've never met her.

Yet I know of her through this textured and warm kelvazhagu veladai or sweet #pancake, leavened with her memory, care, and temporo-culinary presence.

Gingerly nipping at our third veladai, amma @chitraatalks tells the composition of this pancake: finger #millet flour, jaggery, and overipe red banana.

The veladai is uncommon at my mother's home. Memory and the incidental availability of ingredients, and of course, my mother's labour led to mixing, mashing, pouring, oiling, tossing and waiting, finally manifesting these sweet adais.

The slight toffeeness of the bread stained our fingers and cooled in our mouth, perfect for chewing invoked the memory of Kamala.

She was a friend's mother. Around 30 years ago, when my mother was carrying my first sister, these veladais was packed and delivered to my mother by Kamala's son. It's common household knowledge that ragi and red bananas are great for lactation and pregnant mothers.

The less space the veladais occupied on our plates, the more space did Kamala consume in my mind. At the end of the meal, I was adequately full, satiety as oral memory, as a personality of an unknown person, with tender force became one with me.

From #woman to woman, from mother to to-be mother the veladais carried care, hope and nutrition. And on this day, it came to me through the hearth, with love.

Brewing coffee is one of my favourite daily routines. A cup go strong coffee made with farm fresh milk always will hit the right spot. While on holiday in Chennai, I never miss out on evening coffee with Karachi biscuits while listening to some music and gossiping with my mum ♥️
