two years ago today I agreed to go on a chilly ice cream date with a guy I barely knew. Prior to this date, I was completely convinced that a first date was all it would be. I had every wall up and no intention of letting anyone in. Thomas happily agreed to meet me at Mason whippy dip and sit in the freezing cold while we ate soft serve. He asked me all the right questions and gave all the right answers to the ones I asked him. And we just kept talking. We finally said goodnight after 6hrs of endless conversation. I drove home realizing there was something different about him and I really wanted to go on a second date. And we did. And haven’t stopped since.

Anyone who has ever asked me about Thomas has heard me say, “he is the best man I’ve ever met.” And truly he is. He is the safest place and the steadiest rock. He is tender and strong, sweet and exciting, loving and loyal. The Lord has blessed me immensely with a man that strives to love me like Christ everyday. God’s timing and plan is so perfect and I see that played out everyday in the dream I’m living in. Marriage is the best thing ever. It’s fun and sweet and refining in every way. The last two years by Thomas’ side and the short time as his wife have been the greatest gift I have ever received. I am blessed beyond measure.

Jesus spent time at the temple.
And He spent time at tables.

Yet somehow, we’ve learned to emphasize the value of the gathering while neglecting the importance of the table.

What happens in the gathering can be worship.
What happens around the table can be worship too.

The Old Covenant had a holy place where God’s presence dwelled.

But in the New Covenant, we became the dwelling place.

His presence is no longer confined to a building made by human hands. He dwells in His people.

So we gather in Churches.
And we gather around tables.

We worship through songs and sermons.
And we worship through meals, conversation, hospitality, discipleship, confession, laughter, and breaking bread together.

The table is not a lesser place for ministry.

I’m convinced He’s just as pleased with people gathered at your table as He is when you gather at your church buildings.

Maybe we need to stop thinking that the sacred only happens inside church buildings.

Sometimes, it happens over dinner.
