Halfway through Term 2, and soon to be halfway through the year. It’s been..

Teaching has had so many good moments this term. Funny moments. Playing Monopoly. Cool science pracs. Deep conversations about social media. A couple of kids so excited about our Digital Impact projects that they’re working on them on their own time. I’m starting to be more sure that I like teaching.

So I hope I can keep teaching full time. Finally saw an orthopaedic surgeon, and he’s like “ur knees are perfect, keep doing what ur doing lol”. Which...I’m not sure is working bc I don’t think my knees are going to get better if they don’t get any rest days. Are there ways to teach year 7 while sitting the whole time? Need to find out.

Been seeing a counsellor, and he suggested that I’m coming to terms with the limitations of reality. Can’t go everywhere, do everything, make everyone happy. Idk yet how that’s ok.

This morning I was listening to Hard Fork and they were talking about a party one of the hosts went to at a gay bar in San Francisco. They had software engineers in their underwear sitting on pedestals on stage, coding for hours while people drank and danced, and then they started playing AI-generated music that was like “AI is god, thank AI.”

and I laughed so much, but it also made me sad bc this is another life I could be living. I could be in the Bay Area, where I have friends, where I actually have a freaking FasTrak on my car for the bridges, and anyway it’s actually a really cool place. Not better than here, just different. It’s almost like, what was the point of listening to this story if I can’t be in SF now, experiencing it? What’s the point of knowing about other places if you can’t go there?

So I had my septoplasty on Tuesday. It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 days already, so I guess the recovery’s been pretty good. So I was waiting in the little room before the operating theatre for like 30 minutes, and they had instrumental Christmas music playing and one of those fireplaces on YouTube on the computer screen, so it was really relaxing. And then the anaesthetist came in and was OK, this is just going to feel like you’ve had a few beers on a Friday night, and then she put in an IV, and I don’t know what her Friday nights are like, but they must be pretty lit, because about 5 seconds later it’s all done and I’m in the recovery room.

The 2 hours following that were the only really bad part, and at the time they felt like possibly the worst two hours of my life, because I was so tired that I felt like I shouldn’t exist, but I couldn’t sleep. They said that as soon as I’d had a wee, I’d be able to leave, and even though I had to go, I found it nearly impossible. So I kept going to the toilet, trying, giving up, and going back and sitting down and waiting. Other people came and went and I wondered if they’d forgotten about me. I had a blanket but for some reason I was shivering almost uncontrollably. But eventually I was able to wee, and so I got to leave. I was still miserably tired for a little while, but by dinner time I felt fine. Just stuffy and bleeding all over the place. I decided I would need heaps more gauze, so Jake took me to a chemist and I stocked up, left a little blood on their floor as a memento, and went back and basically played Minecraft till 12am because I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep.

I slept in 1-1.5 hour bursts on the first night, and the first day was still pretty uncomfortable/annoying, but yesterday it started to clear. Now it’s like I’m just in the final stages of a cold and my nose and mouth feel really dry. You have to do this sinus rinse at least 4x a day, and I think overall it helps but for like an hour afterwards it actually makes you feel more stuffy. There hasn’t been any pain, so that’s cool.
