Joining my fellow @babel.chorus singers to perform “When Dawn Shines” as part of the 2025 Luminato Festival was once in a lifetime! (Or technically 6 times in a lifetime 🤓) Thanks @drelainechoi and @krystian.lada for the vision and letting my music be a small part of this experience!

‘The audience completes the circle’ - @philmadzsingers

••••••••

Babεl baritone + board chair Albert Wong (@choir_dad ) asked Sir Mark Carpio in a recent @ludwigvantoronto interview

Madz has a very unique performance style. For most of the time, the singers sit to perform, and sit very closely to each other. What is the reason for that?
Sixty years ago, the first members of the Madz, including our founder, Andrea Veneracion, wanted to follow the tradition of madrigal singing during the Renaissance period. The singers then would make music during banquets, sitting around a table with all the food and wine. So, from the very first public performance of the group, they decided to sit in a semicircle formation. This has been the tradition of the Madz and has also become our signature.

In another conversation with our AD @drelainechoi , one of the Madz member also mentioned that the audience completes a full circle, singing is a very intimate activity ❤️ (📸Dragonfly Imagery)

Meet our PODIUM/ MADz project singers!🙌 These singers are dedicated, passionate, and fun! Make sure to come say hi to us on May 16 at Podium in Montreal and come to our concert on May 26 in Toronto! Big thank you to @lachlanmasonmusic for the design of our cover art - featuring one character from each song title in our setlist, which diffuse in waves. This represents our program theme ‘Waves of Nostalgia’ as well as the mingling of cultures.

Can’t believe our performance at the COC showcase for Asian Heritage month was already two weeks ago! ✨We put our hearts and souls into this performance and we’re grateful to have been able to perform a diverse repertoire in 9 Asian dialects/languages for a full house of enthusiastic & supportive attendees at the Four Seasons Centre. In addition to this performance, we also recorded many of our pieces. Stay tuned for our video release this summer! (Sneak peek: turn on sound and listen to our recording of Mawlaya Salli arr. Shireen Abu Khader - featuring soloists William Salinas Crosby, tenor and Isaiah John Sison, beatboxer) #choir #choralmusic #choirlove #torontochoir #asianhertiagemonth #torontomusic

A year ago, Babεl and the Canadian Music Centre (Ontario) launched the inaugural Choral Composer Mentorship Program. Six composers were chosen from dozens of applicants from around the world to work with mentors Stephanie Martin and Dr. Matthew Emery on a new choral work. Although the program is currently on hold due to the pandemic, we are staying in touch with these six participants and cannot wait to perform their pieces whenever we are able to meet again safely. In the meantime, we want to share these wonderful emerging composers with our community! We will be introducing them over the next few weeks, so stay tuned and don't forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook so that you don't miss a beat! #choirlove #torontochoir #choralmusic #choralcomposers #composers #choir #choralcomposition
