The park is getting close! If anyone can help out removing some trash bags or scrap wood 👌. Also our modular ramps(fresh park) could use a new home? Reach out here if interested.

GP PART 3: DIY

The reception of the miniramp and other post-funbox features seems to have been lukewarm at best. What may have been a well-intentioned replacement for a 14-year-old ramp changed the flow of the park and, as I mentioned before, removed one of its most popular features.

Various homemade elements—rails, boxes, etc.—have come and gone over the years, but more recently, a group of locals has been making some more substantial improvements to the park. In 2021 the crew built a 4-ft quarterpipe with a hip on one side, and in 2023 they constructed a half pyramid in the park’s adjacent corner. The most recent addition is a manual pad with a bank-like feature on one side, built over the original SPi manny pad. Unfortunately, the new ramps have at least 17 years of decaying asphalt to contend with—an uphill battle barring any major intervention (i.e. a new surface).

This era of GP is one that many SPi parks, if left in place long enough, arrive at, and it illustrates both the allure of neglected spaces to skaters and the potential for real revitalization when parks are left in the hands of those who use them. GP sits in stark contrast to the pristine, roughly half-million-dollar David W. Deane park that opened behind Stellos Stadium in 2017 (New New Park, if you will), but despite GP’s relative shortcomings, it still shows signs of life.

The paradox of skaters turning to parks like GP when seemingly more attractive options are available is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting parts of SPi’s legacy. A number of factors contribute to this phenomenon, but one, I suspect, is that there is a certain degree of freedom to be found in a forgotten SPi park that is absent in modern parks with higher budgets, more elaborate designs, and stricter rules.
